editThe rank of sergeant major is not an administrative position in the U.S. Marine Corps, it is a separate and distinct rank of grade E9. There is no lateral movement between the two. To reflect this, I have moved references to Sergeant Major and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps to the sergeant major page. —Fox1 October 11, 2004
- According to the entry for David W. Sommers, he was promoted to Master Sergeant, before switching tracks over to First Sergeant|. I do not know how rare this is, but it shows that such a switch is not unheard of.—MJBurrage • TALK • 02:38, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

E8 and E9 Billet question
editIt use to be, but not sure if it still holds true. A MSgt and MGySgt could hold a 1stSgt and SgtMaj Billet but not the other way around. Would this still be true? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.80.95.230 (talk) 14:40, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
