Name

edit

According to the history on [1] Matamoros is named after the hero Mariano Matamoros and not after a saint. Kiekvogel 15:06, 6 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Refugio

edit

In my readings about the Rio Grande, I see Matamoros was likely named Refugio, but am refraining from entering this into the article until I can find a citation. --Ancheta Wis 10:59, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

The correct name was "Villa del Refugio".

Drug trafficking?

edit

I keep running across this city as a center for drug trafficking and drug cartel activity and violence but there is no mention of it at all. If for some reason, this page must be "sanitized", links to Wikipedia articles that discuss this aspect of the economy, politics and crime should be listed under "See also". 69.125.134.86 (talk) 15:35, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

There's also no mention of the, you know, human sacrifice cult147.9.106.214 (talk) 18:54, 29 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

I'm surprised there is no mention of either drug trafficking or the Mark Kilroy murder in 1989. Seems like a very sanitized picture of this city. TheBlinkster (talk) 20:14, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Feel free to add them. Mark Kilroy's murder is definitely an event that has shaped how U.S. citizens view Matamoros. Same with drug trafficking. I have plans to fix this page and update it. Most of the info is from the mid-2000s anyways. ComputerJA () 00:06, 28 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Etymology

edit

I don't mean to be boorish by observing the obvious, but should it not be pointed out that the demonym or surname "[Los] Matamoros" means "[the] Moor Killers"? Mousebelt (talk) 01:32, 4 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that name warrants an explanation. I came here specifically looking for one. Udibi (talk) 21:17, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Chronology

edit

The sequence of events in the History section is all over the place. Events during the American Civil War are discussed both under Mexican Independence and its own heading. Also, the discussion of the French Intervention is placed after the American Civil War when they were contemporaneous. AusJeb (talk) 15:37, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • @AusJeb: - I agree, feel free to update it as needed. I worked on this article back in 2011-2012 when I was very inexperienced as an editor. Matamoros has a lot of history, but my research abilities and resources were limited back then. You are welcomed to change and update as needed. Morogris () 18:33, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
