Origin
editI can't find any etymology for this name. It would seem likely that it is derived from the French "matelot", but I can't find any reference saying so. Although the word "matlow" is now listed e.g. in the Oxford Reference as an alternative spelling of "matelot" (chiefly in the Royal Navy), it says that is 20th century so its use as a surname precedes this. 62.165.227.102 (talk) 09:26, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
