Matsumae clan vs. Matsumae fief

edit

I have to ask-- isn't there a difference between the Matsumae clan (clan as in family-- 松前氏 "Matsumae-shi" in Japanese) and the Matsumae fief (松前藩 "Matsumae-han")? Should they be one combined article, or two separate ones? -Tadakuni (talk) 15:51, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

There really ought to be two separate articles. When I originally created this article, from limited sources, what I wrote tended to address both topics (the history of the clan and its domain overlap considerably...). But there really ought to be separate articles; as you've been doing a lot of work on clans and domains, particularly in the far north, please do feel free to go ahead and make the necessary edits, if you are so inclined. I'm sure you'd do a far better job than I anyway. LordAmeth (talk) 15:36, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Captions

edit

Shouldn't the captions on the newly added photos read "Prince" instead of "Pince of Matsumay"? ... LordAmeth (talk) 20:59, 30 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Clarification Needed

edit

"In 1790, a massive earthquake struck Hokkaidō, and a forty-two-foot tsunami lifted the Russian ship out of the sea[...]". This seems to refer to the ship that arrived in 1779, but this party of Russians was "forbidden to return to the island". How come, they were still lurking around after 11(!) years? Very confusing. Please clarify!--SavannahD (talk) 12:46, 1 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Also there is no reference to a significant earthquake or tsunami of that date in the available catalogues. Mikenorton (talk) 09:06, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
