Citations
editThis article is in need of citations so I added tags to get it addressed. I plan to work on adding citations myself, but since I will only be able to do small sections at a time I figured the tag was necessary. Anyone that can help by citing material already in the article and/or adding to it would be much appreciated as I think the article has room for improvement.Sarah1607 (talk) 15:56, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Copyright
editI read the copyright section, and I got the impression that you could use the work of others, as long as, you cited that the information was from them. indin
I have submitted new work that is not under copyright. Tribal-fusion 01:32, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Correction
editCan I offer a corrective? The man presented in the photo, while he is William Bradby, was a member of the Pamunkey Tribe, not Mattaponi, and the regalia in which he is depicted is not traditional, but something the Pamunkey men more or less dreamed up for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. Tribemen wore similar outfits at public events throughout the rest of the 19th century. Valideyes 15:56, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- I think if the image is in fact incorrect, meaning the man pictured was not a Mattaponi, it should be removed.Sarah1607 (talk) 15:56, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
- The following site [1] as well as Helen C. Rountree's book, Pocahontas's People: Powhatan Indians of Virginia Through Four Centuries show the photo of William Bradby's and he is listed as a Pamunkey. The page with the photo is not available through the following website with Rountree's book, but the description that says he is Pamunkey is. It is under Illustrations near the front of the book here [2]. This makes it evident enough to me that the photo is not of a Mattaponi so I will be removing it.Sarah1607 (talk) 18:11, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Classification
editIt's no longer a stub, but requires references to move past a beginning state. Spinach Monster (talk) 17:45, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
- I agree and put a separate section here on the talk page to help address the issue. I also added tags to the article to make it more clear that citations are needed.Sarah1607 (talk) 15:56, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Language
editI have removed this section from the article as nothing I have ever read says anything about a written language like this and I have been unable to find anything at all to support it: "The current written language, Powhatan Syllabary, is adapted from the Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics which is used by other Algonquin language speaking tribes." I am putting this here in case anyone does ever find a citation to support it, at which point it should be put back in the article.Sarah1607 (talk) 14:31, 19 September 2009 (UTC)
related groups
edithow come the renape are not included as a related group it only has pamunkey as related group. and renape claim decent from pohattan tribes so they are diffinatly a related group. 99.164.108.120 (talk) 06:40, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
I do not know which tribe the Renape are related to specifically so that is probably why they are not mentioned in this article. In general though it seems that those listed under related tribes is a simple list meaning it is not necessarily an all inclusive list. If there is enough cited evidence to support adding the Renape to the list then I see no issue with adding them as a related tribe. I do not know enough about the tribe in general and therefore do not know which one of the tribes still living in Virginia they were most related to. Just because they have ties to one of the Powhatan Indian tribes in Virginia does not mean they were related specifically to the Mattaponi tribe.Sarah1607 (talk) 14:02, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
