Pronunciation?
editmau-REESE; morris – 173.61.9.126 (talk) 18:58, 18 February 2016 (UTC)
Alternative forms—Maverick.
editAlthough I am no philologist, it is my strong suspicion that the surname Maverick is a form of Maurice. Can anyone confirm? Also: are there any other common-enough forms of the name you are aware of? 101.174.152.99 (talk) 17:24, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
Etymology
editA more complete discussion of this as a form of Moor is found on a different wikipedia page, Mauri. Though it has acquired a corollary meaning in modern times as 'dark,' it also has a meaning from antiquity as related to a sea or lake - and is still used today in this form (see especially the English coastal moors the cognate 'mere,' as well as Latin 'mer,' and numerous other European cognates). See the etymology at *mori-. There are numerous related Mediterranean toponyms such as Mauritania, Morocco (Marakkesh), and across the Mare Mediterrania, in France, the Massif des Maures and a related coastal plain - ie, a moor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Blauschwein (talk • contribs) 20:33, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

– IMO the primary meaning. - Altenmann >talk 16:44, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
- Support: pretty clear primary topic.
- Oppose. The emperor, novel, and film all get way more pageviews than the name page. Station1 (talk) 02:40, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- Counting pageviews in the case of the clear common-sense primary topic is IMO a hapless burocratic quirk. I could understand this if a tie-breaker were required. - Altenmann >talk 04:34, 28 August 2023 (UTC)
- Except there is no "clear common-sense primary topic" in this case. The name is not really a significant encyclopedic topic. The article is mostly a list of people who happen to have that name; although the two unsourced paragraphs about the name are admittedly more than many name articles attempt. One could make a case for the novel/film being the primary topic, but the film alone doesn't quite meet the criteria. Therefore, WP:NOPRIMARY applies, in my opinion. - Oppose per Station1, clearly not primary by usage so disambiguation is the best choice. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:17, 29 August 2023 (UTC)
