When it happened, it was May 1st here, but May 2nd there. I believe we're going with the local time for this one, so his death is being recorded as May 2nd, not May 1st, which is why he isn't on this page. Silverseren^C 14:49, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Petrol Loco?

I have removed the following:

• 1902 - Petrol Loco, the first prototype gasoline-powered "locomobile" (automobile), is completed.

I can find no verification for a "petrol loco" created in 1902. Can anyone verify this? Kingturtle 06:14, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

Great American Boycott

First unsolicited email / spam

Quote for May 1: "1978 - The first e-mail spam was sent by a DEC marketing representative to every ARPANET address on the west coast of the United States."

Update: I found Brad Templeton's Blog, which appears to be as reliable as internet pages can be; see http://www.templetons.com/brad/spamreact.html . Note, however, that even he admits that the email is only "Possibly the first spam". Ayrton Senna

Probably not. If you read the criteria for selected anniversaries, you'll see that "the event and the selected article (bolded item) needs to be listed in the Events section of its corresponding day of the year article." Deaths are listed in deaths, not events. Fabricationary 15:33, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Error?

"# 1945 - Soviet troops raise the Soviet Flag over the Reichstag, in Berlin" However, this event is listed as May 2nd in the chronology of 1945

Labor Day

For the sake of clarification, the reason it seemed reasonable to remove Labor Day for the May 1 article is that the Labor Day article makes no mention of the holiday occurring on May 1 in any other country. This could surely be a fault in the article, but it seems that if the May 1 article makes the claim, it should at least be described in the Labor Day article to avoid this kind of confusion. Error in Birthday

Bin Laden death reports

So far, reports indicate that Bin Laden may have been killed within the last week. If that's the case his death should not be listed on this page. Guam commonwealth

St Walpurga

I don't think anyone celebrates the date of canonization of St Walpurga. Is this one of the 'various days' mentioned in the article? A source would be good. --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 19:28, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Her article says "the day of her canonization, 1 May (possibly 870), was also celebrated during the high medieval period" implying it is no longer celebrated. I suggest she be removed from today's article.--Richardson mcphillips (talk) 17:40, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Cleanup of births and deaths

In accordance with the guidelines, I'm continuing to weed the Births and Deaths sections by removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages. Where possible, these have been transferred to the relevant Year in Topic articles. As well as making the lists more manageable, this will help with the globalization effort.Deb (talk) 13:11, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

@Deb: WP:BIRTHDOY doesn't say anything about needing entries in 5 or more Wikipedia languages to qualify. Is there another source for this? If not, and if you are going to use this as a criterion, wouldn't it be a good idea to generate consensus for it first, and then modify WP:BIRTHDOY accordingly? The most recent discussions on this topic was at Wikipedia talk:Days of the year/Archive 4#June 11 and removal of entries by Deb, which ran from 17 December 2014 to 15 April 2015. There was no consensus. Near the end of the discussion was this:

@Deb. If the pruning taking place is "in accordance with guidelines" and you're "removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages", that criteria must be part of the guideline. It doesn't work well for individual Wikipedia editors to have their own rules that operate at cross purposes. As I said before, let's generate consensus and modify WP:BIRTHDOY. —Anomalocaris (talk) 16:50, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Tried that, Anomalocaris. Nothing is operating at "cross purposes", since consensus has been established in the many discussions that these sections are too long and need work. It's just how to go about it that we haven't reached agreement on. WP:BIRTHDOY already says that having a Wikipedia article is a "minimum requirement" for inclusion. Also, you're mistaken in thinking that the last discussion was in April 2015, plus the quoted comment from Mufka is not the final one in that discussion - it's just one of a huge number of comments. The most recent discussion takes up most of the current Wikipedia talk:Days of the year page and ended about 3 months ago.Deb (talk) 11:58, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
