name
editHe was born with the last name Bauer, meaning "peasant" as it is common for Jews living in the ghetto's to have that sort of German last name. Why does someone keep changing that to Rothschild on his birth name? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:E000:864A:F800:E523:F4D4:4FCC:E550 (talk) 03:12, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
Why is his middle name commonly spelled as Amschel, when it is actually Anschel? The inscriptions on his children's graves spell it in Hebrew as אנשיל.
Many of the children have Mayer in their names, so it doesn't seem logical that this is a given name. Could it be the family name in Hebrew, to which the Rothschild name was appended?
- I hope this is not deliberate misspelling Wikipedia, because that would smell of ANTISEMITISM to me. Fix it. Defender-of-House-Roth (talk) 20:39, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Re: Name
editIt would seem that Amschel is a mistake; Anschel is a common Ashkenazi name, but there don't seem to be any references to a version with an "m" anywhere except in reference to Mayer Anschel Rothschild. It would seem that the Britannica's got it wrong, too. The family would know, though.
A wedding notice published in the NYT on Feb 9, 1909 refers to him as Anschel.
- Could you provide a reference for that? I can hear the antisemites running to change it back to "Amschel", throwing an alphabet soup of acronyms at me and then laughing and blocking me when I try to correct it back. With the NYT reference I should be able to correct the name, despite the hate in their hearts. Defender-of-House-Roth (talk) 20:43, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
In some sources it is said that his last name was originally Bauer.

- Shouldn't be write in the biography section (as most wiki biographies) that "he was born from Jews father in the town.. etc" or that he is Ashkenazi? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.134.1.107 (talk) 23:29, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
Business career
editIt says here "Business expanded rapidly following the French Revolution when Rothschild handled payments from Britain for the hire of Hessian mercenaries." But he was working for the Prince of Hesse already in the 1760's, and the Hessian soldiers were hired to put down the revolt in the American colonies in the 1770's. The French Revolution was in the 1790's. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JPLeonard (talk • contribs) 02:56, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, that doesn't read right. I think it should be "Business expanded rapidly following the French Revolution when Rothschild handled Britain's requirement for gold bullion to fund its overseas armies." - need to check Elon. --mervyn (talk) 08:33, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
German Translation
editRot Schild is German for Red Sign, not shield.
P.S.- I also found that he was born Meyer Anschel Bauer, and upon returning to Frankfurt to take over his father's business, saw the red hexagram over the doorway that his father put there, understood the significance, and changed his name to Rothschild (Red Sign). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.151.76.141 (talk) 02:46, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- Track down the reference for this information and we can add your corrections. I may have to track this down myself, but my time for this project is extremely limited due to other projects. It would be great if one of her house could pick up the slack with this article and get the necessary changes incorporated?Defender-of-House-Roth (talk) 20:51, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Article very disrespectful to Schönche Rothschild!
edit- While not a direct descendent of hers, I nevertheless find it disrespectful to the #HouseOfRoth that the original matriarch of their house, Schönche Rothschild, the PRIMARY memetic and EQUAL genetic fountain of astonishing success, wealth and power, is not discussed AT ALL in the #Rothschild Wiki-article. #Wikipedia #sexism at its finest, IMO.
- There is a value far above that of #business and #discretion; I speak of honoring our families, especially the women who have been unrecognized and disrespected to date.
- She deserves EQUAL respect. -#Anonymous #DOHORsec - #HeForShe Defender-of-House-Roth (talk) 20:05, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
Mr. Rothschild is a German-citizen or non-ethnic German
editI saw my one edit was reverted by Bender235. It's not a big deal, but may I know why, please? I just wanted to make it easier to understand what type of German he was. 24.71.120.46 (talk) 03:09, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
