Talk:Mazkeret Batya
Problematic history
editThe article says "Mazkeret Batya was named in memory of Betty Solomon von Rothschild". However, the original name was Ekron and that is how it was referred to until sometime in the early 20th century. Presumably it was renamed for Betty some time after that. I'm not editing the article yet since I don't have a source with the complete story. Maybe someone else does. Zerotalk 06:52, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- Seems the official name was Ekron/Eqron through the Mandate period but the name Mazkeret Batya was used too. The censuses of 1922 and 1931 both listed it as Eqron. Palestine Post has both names many times during 1934-1950, often in conjunction. A 1950 article (March 13, p2) titled "Baron Gives Ekron Paved Roads" says "Ekron was founded 66 years ago by Baron Edmond de Rothschild and was then called "Mizkeret Batya" after the Baroness". Questions remaining: when was the alternative name adopted? when was the official name changed? Zerotalk 07:14, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
