Different Dosage advice, lack of citation

edit

The dose section is contrary to what my Pediatrician just prescribed for my child's pinworm infection. We were prescribed 2 x 100mg tablets to be taken two weeks apart. This at least partially contradicts the dose section. It appears inaccurate and has no citations.

I too had a different dosage... My doctors have given me 2x100 mg a day, for 3 days

Mechanism of action is poorly written

edit

Mebendazole blocks polymixin based microtubule formation, destroying the glucose uptake receptor in the nematode. This article is poorly written and incorrect.

What exactly is the mechanism of action of this drug, the article mentions both glucose uptake inhabition and preventing spindle formation, vastly different actions. Which is it? Both?

Information from the manufacturers website

edit

I agree that this is an incredibly badly written page. What does "selectively and irreversibly blocking uptake of glucose and other nutrients in susceptible adult intestine where helminths dwell" mean? That the drug prevents the host's intestine from absorbing these nutrients? So it kills the patient?

The manufacturers website says that it prevents the worms taking up glucose and they die because of lack of energy.

CAS registry have no information about history of discovery of this medicine

edit

The main links, like CAS registry, have no information about history of discover and/or massive use. PS: the "Date of Entry" (1974) of CAS is not the "entry year". --Krauss (talk) 19:05, 29 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Inconsistent single dose cost in the USA

edit

Which is it? Currently the article claims both:

“In the United States a single dose is about 18 USD.[3]”

“In the United States a single dose is about 440.00 USD as of 2016, while in Australia and the UK it costs about 5 USD.[8]”

Yes in 2015 it was 18 USD in the USA and than it increased to 440 USD in 2016.
Have clarified.

Regarding UK price in the "cost" subcategory.

edit

Under the Cost subcategory there is this line: "In Australia 6 x 100mg costs approximately US$9 while in the UK this would cost around US$19.[20] and about US$5 in Europe." With the citation linking to an FT article locked behind a paywall. Currently in the UK Mebendazole under the Ovex brand (100mg x 4 tablet dose) are sold online for £6, £6 is about $8 US or just over $11 Australian.

(https://ayp.healthcare/ovex-family-pack-4-threadworm-treatment-tablets) for an example.

In pharmacies in the UK it is often cheaper, but I cannot give you an exact figure. So it seems as though if the $18 price is written in that FT article, it is either incorrect or out of date.

Giardiasis

edit

There is no indication in the use of mebendazole for the treatment of giardia — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.117.189.244 (talk) 17:39, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

? "In conclusion, the use of mebendazole, which is less toxic with no side-effects, is available and effective on Giardia intestinalis as well as intestinal nematodes, is recommended especially in the areas where giardiasis and intestinal nematodiasis are prevalent and overlap."
