Images
editPer WP:IMAGES I have removed two images that have no relationship to a medical encyclopedia, namely, the flag for WHO and a picture of the Hippocratic Oath. Unfortunately, user:LuisArmandoRasteletti, creator of this article has reinserted them. 70.29.208.129 (talk) 15:32, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- I agree that these are not appropriate images for this article. A better choice would be a picture of an actual (perhaps antique?) medical encyclopedia, or perhaps a person famous for writing one. (I really wish that this article had a good history section!) WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:28, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- It looks like we have several good options for pages of ancient medical encyclopedias available: File:Canons of medicine.JPG, File:Canon ibnsina arabic.jpg, File:Al-zahrawi surgical tools.gif, File:Zahrawi1.png, File:Islamic MedText c1500.jpg, File:Compendium of Materia Medica.gif, File:Canon-Avicenna.jpg, File:Avicenna - Canon of Medicine.jpg. Which one do you think is most interesting? WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:33, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
History
editIt seems like we might be able to compile a bit of a history section from existing articles:
- Islamic medicine#Encyclopedias
- Pharmacopeia#History
- Avicenna, who wrote several encyclopedias
- Sushruta Samhita, Sanskrit
- Liber pantegni
- Marcellus_Empiricus#The_Book_of_Medicaments
- List of encyclopedias by branch of knowledge#Medicine
- Timeline of medicine and medical technology#Middle_Ages: c. 838-870 - Ali ibn Sahl Rabban al-Tabari, a pioneer of pediatrics and the field of child development, writes the first encyclopedia of medicine.[1]
- Bencao Gangmu, Chinese medica materia
- Brhat Trayi, Sanskrit encyclopedias
- Medicina Plinii, 4th century Latin
- Bald's Leechbook, 9th century Old English
- Cyranides, 4th century BCE Greek work that includes magic
I think it's fair to include the old "drug encyclopedias", since the difference between 'medicine' and 'medications' was essentially non-existent. I'm not sure I'd include the Galenic corpus, since it's really more like a collection of independent papers instead of a single work. WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:25, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
