Talk:Melolontha hippocastani
Melolontha hippocastani was nominated as a Natural sciences good article, but it did not meet the good article criteria at the time (May 31, 2024, reviewed version). There are suggestions on the review page for improving the article. If you can improve it, please do; it may then be renominated. |

Lead section
editYour lead section could do a better job of discussing the important and more interesting facts about the beetle. I think adding more information about mate-finding behavior or their interactions with humans will allow you to transfer the sentences you wrote about habitat and geographic distribution into their own section. I think it would be better if there were a few sentences on the effects of plant volatiles and sex pheromones on mating behavior in the leading section, as mating behavior is core to this species and takes a lot of space on this page. I added the following sentences: The mate-finding behavior in M. hippocastani is facilitated by plant volatiles and sex pheromones. Mating activities primarily takes place during the evening flight periods. Heater4 (talk) 04:24, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Mating behavior
editIn the second paragraph, it’s a little confusing for me that only males exhibited behavioral responses indicating the volatile response is a mate-finding strategy instead of a search for food. I think it would be better if you could explain a little about the reasoning. Heater4 (talk) 04:25, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Structure
editI think your sections should be organized differently. Refer to the "Beetle Topic Order" document for the general outline that your article should follow. MiJiEm (talk) 20:26, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
I moved the section “Interactions with humans” to the last because I think it would be more logical to provide all the behavioral information before talking about the impacts. Besides, please refer to the “Beetle Topic Order” document for other structural improvements. Heater4 (talk) 04:24, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Diet and digestion
editYou mention what M. hippocastani adults and larvae feed on here and there throughout the article, but it is not explicitly stated in the diet and digestion section. Even though it might be a little redundant, I think it would help this section be clearer if you started off with what their food source is, so that all the biochemistry information regarding digestion makes a bit more sense. Hello, I'll take on this review. I notice some problems immediately: I suggest the nominator have a look at the recommended beetle article structure guideline. Comparing the recommendations to this article, one notices that sections on "Taxonomy and phylogeny" and "Description and identification" are missing; these are part of "broad coverage" criteria aspect of the good article criteria, and the article can't be promoted without them. This species was described more than two centuries ago, so there should be lots of literature that can be used to fill these gaps. Please check the other suggestions in the beetle page too and see if anything's missing. These deficiencies would normally be enough to fail the review, but I understand this is a class project, so I'll give some time to fill the gaps before taking a closer look. No response from the nominator in seven+ days, so it's time to close this review. Esculenta (talk) 23:08, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
