What's the distinction?
editWhat is the difference between a Merchant Vessel (MV) and a Motor Vessel? - Ageekgal (talk) 21:25, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
- One distinction is this: merchant ships that were steamships and sailing vessels weren't motor vessels. Also, in practice, a difference is often drawn between motor tankers and the more general term motor vessel. HausTalk 10:40, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
Proposed merge with Commercial vessel

- Merge done. -- P 1 9 9 • TALK 18:27, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
- MERGE As "Commercial vessel" is just a USCG classification, and "Merchant vessel" seems to be a more generic term, the former article should be merged into this one (possibly as a section on its own) and a redirect left. Regards, DPdH (talk) 03:49, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
- Support. I was initially inclined not to support because the two sets overlap, but neither is a subset of the other. A fishing boat is an example of a commercial vessel that isn't a merchant vessel. USNS Mercy (T-AH-19) is an example of a merchant vessel that isn't a commercial vessel. However, a well placed clause in the lede along the lines of "The closely related term commercial vessel..." might be a good workaround.HausTalk 04:49, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
