Rather than a revert war, perhaps talking would be best?

Normally, when there are other current words for the title in other languages, they are included parenthetically on the top line. There is a long-standing guideline on this, Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English)#Include alternatives. Please keep the Greek. But why the Albanian?

However, historic names for the town are traditionally included in the "=History=" section, not the lede. It doesn't matter whether those folks still live there. If there are other older non-official names for the area, that's where they belong!

In places like Antakya, they warrant a separate article Antioch, as that article is so much larger than the modern article.

Moreover, the many non-English translations for other words in the body text would be parenthetical on the linked pages, not here. I've moved those language parts to their respective pages.

Finally, Strabo was Roman (and studied in Rome), not from Ancient Greece. "The traditional date for the end of the Ancient Greek period is the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC."

Albanian name

edit

I removed the Albanian name, until someone can give me proof that the Albanians had anything to do with this city. It was added by 200.142.176.82 (talk · contribs), who's only other contribution was to vandalize the Greeks article. --Khoikhoi 04:34, 27 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Population

edit

The article contradicts itself on population. At the top it says "537,842 according to the 2000 census" and at the bottom, "733,066 (2000 census". Rolofft 06:23, 1 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Three remarks

edit

1. In the Mersin Today section it says "Turkey now plans to construct its first nuclear power plant in the port city of Mersin." Well, this is not exactly so. In fact, the nuclear plant is planned to be constructed at a site some 140 km (app. 80 miles) west of Mersin. (It seems there is some confusion over the province of Mersin and the city of Mersin.)

2. Yumuktepe is one of the two ancient sites which are within the boundries of the city. OK, this is already mentioned in the History section. But what about the other site (namely Soli or Soloi.)Without Soloi, half of Mersin history as well as the story of Roman general Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus must be considered to be lost.

3.İçel Sanat Kulübü (Art club of Mersin) should be mentioned in the Culture section. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 09:15, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Port area

edit

I don't know what port area exacly means. But a port area of 785 square kilometres is hard to believe. The water area protected by breakwaters is about 3,5 square kilometers and depository area about 1 square kilometers. (These figures are from construction date. But since then there had been no big revisions.) I think that the writer should check the references. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:01, 14 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

6 months later: In section Economy it reads: Mersin port has a total port area of 785 km2. In this talk page I have already pointed out that it is impossible. But unfortunatelly I was not corrected. Looking back in the history pages I solved the mystery. Originally when it was created in 2004 by Leandros the port area was 786 000 m2 which is perfectly allright. But on 7 Aug of 2007 an anonymous editor changed the figure to 785 km2. I am going to correct it. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:27, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

What ?

edit

"Also it is believed that God was born in Mersin some billions years ago, and this proves that Henrique lost"

Frankly, I don't understand what the above sentence means . (It was added on the 28 th of Aug 2009 ) Who beleives it and what does it prove ? Any idea ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:27, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Change in the infobox

edit

I changed the photo in the infobox. Because the older photo (bird's eye view) was somewhat irritating with distorted contours at perpheral area. The new photo has the same caption. The older photo is in the Images subsection. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 16:43, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Come on the one you put looks like a dirty dockland... Mersîn deserves better that that! What else have you got?? --85.104.147.59 (talk) 11:46, 31 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
