Talk:Metahuman

Latest comment: 2 years ago by Amelia-the-comic-geek in topic Total mess

I'm afraid I must challenge the presentation that DC comics or comics at all generated the term "metahuman", as I seem to recollect usage of this term in old SF films, and it was probably appearing in SF novels too before DC used it.

I'd have to agree here. I wouldn't even say DC popularized it, or even is the most comon use of it. Maybe separating this into sections for comics, books and other subjects might be better? Ipstenu 19:43, 7 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm curious as to where the information on Marvel usage comes from, too... in my not inconsiderable experience with reading Marvel Comics, they seem to use metahuman as one would expect it to be used... as a convenient catch-all for "more than human", "superhuman", and "non-human"... i.e., if you need one word that describes Spider-man, Thor, and a mutant, it's "metahuman." I've never seen it used to describe anything as precise and narrow as a particular level of physical durability. I'm not touching this right now, because it's possible somebody has seen something in a "Who's Who" type book that I haven't... but I'd like to see a source on it, if there is one.Alexandra Erin 06:46, 8 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

I suspect it's becuase Marvel's skewed towards 'mutants' (ala X-Men) and people forget that the F4 and Spidey (and pretty much everyone up to the X-people) were humans who had 'something' happen to them. I'm more a DC person, and it wasn't until 'recently' (Post Crisis) that I ever noticed anything about meta-humans. That's why I suggested maybe breaking this out into 'usage in media' ... but I don't rememeber enough about Marvel to feel justified in doing it :) Ipstenu 18:34, 8 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

The image used at the top of the article is a poor choice, because I believe that it is generally understood that characters such as Batman, Robin, and Green Arrow, are not metahuman (super powered), but humans with extraordinarily well-developed "normal" abilities. dfg 14:51, 6 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Okay, what's the deal with this bit? It seems rather silly. 172.151.75.189 06:40, 23 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why limit this article to the DCU term?

edit

On 29 May 2015, someone edited the page to remove all traces of non-DCU usage of the term for no apparent reason other than the vague "cleanup" statement. I see no valid reason for such a drastic narrowing of the word, and would propose that the page be made a disambiguation for the multiple uses, with the DCU definition being given its own article under a separate name (e.g. "Metahuman (DC Comics)"). I agree. At the very least Shadowrun and Superworld should have sections on the page explaining their different takes on the term. 82.153.127.94 (talk) 12:23, 4 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

MetahumanMetahuman (DC Comics) – "Metahuman" appears to be a relatively common alternative fictional term for "mutant". Its structure of "meta" and "human" is simple enough that I'm not sure its DC Comics incarnation can lay claim to it in its entirety. In fact, the article itself states that the term was used prior to DC Comics using it. It should be the WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT to Mutants in fiction. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 02:31, 14 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Total mess

edit

This article is a huge mess. Just from a cursory glance, it lists the 'creator' of Metahumans as "Shana". The context is so vague that I can't tell if it's supposed to refer to the creation of the real-world term or the in-universe sub-species. I would assume it's supposed to be the former, but all I can find about "Shana" revolving around Metahumans is Dangaronpa fanfiction and a DC Metahuman name Shauna Belzer, neither are the "creators". Beyond that, levitation is in no way an inherent ability to even DC metahumans, much less the more abstract and broader term.

Furthermore, as other have mentioned before, Metahuman is not an inherently DC term, and so this article should be split, 'Metahuman' and 'Metahumans in DC Comics, with the main page being its broad overall usage.--Amelia-the-comic-geek (talk) 22:55, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

I somehow missed the move request earlier, my bad.--Amelia-the-comic-geek (talk) 22:57, 28 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
