Methadone is possibly more addi ctive than heroin. it adheres to your bone marrow and is harder to"kick".it takes 2 months of severe "sick".it is not the best way to deal with heroin addiction ,but for some the only way.some people use long enough to where the "cells" in their bodies are so used to heroin that they need the methadone to replace it. Unlike her ion Methadone bonds to bone marrow. Methadone and herion produce the same effect as they are both full opioid antagonists. This is why most health care professionals will use bupenehprine instead of the Methadone. Bupe is a partial antagonist and is a lot easier to come off of.

Some people can get off methadone and stay clean but some others can not. It is very hard to come down off of methadone, and has a long withdawl time. Some people have to stay on a methadone maintance program. It also keeps the level of crimes down. The above information is not correct. A quick glance at this has made me think there are some opinions posing as facts. I'm tagging it as unverified till someone gets a chance to look at this more closely. I am not citing any sources as I was on Methadone for 10 years and am sober now. I have studied Methadone for years. I could right this whole wiki just from my experience. Also "Methadone is the most widely studied medication and treatment for any disease in the world." doesn't sound credible to me. Really "any disease"??? It looks like unverified to me as well. Bajamircea 00:37, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

New patients who want methadone mainainance treatment should have to meet more requirements to get into the program. For some severe addicts the program can prove beneficial but for mild users that want a methadone high, it can turn them into more of an addict then they were before they started treaatment.

METHADONE DOES NOT PRODUCE A "HIGH" Methadone does not produce a high. I have been on Methadone for over two years, and it is a widely known fact that Methadone does not produce any kind of "high". It is a stabilizer. Before stating your opinion, please check out the facts before posting.

Whomever said Methadone doesn't get your high is a flat out liar. This guys obviously a rookie if hes only been on the clinic for 2 years. He obviously doen't remember the first 6 monthes he was on the clinic becuase he was either knodding out or has amnesia. After about 6 monthes your body begins to adjust to the stuff and it takes more to get the "desired effect" luckily for people who dont want to get straight they just tell their couselor to UP their dose either 5 or 10 mg at a time. They can keep getting high off their asses until they reach the 200 mg limit for most clinics(although some in NYC goto 250) PLEASE if ANYONE OUT THERE IS CONCIDERING TRYING METHADONE PLEASE TRY SUBOXONE FIRST. It worked fine for me. I took 16mg daily after using 25 bags per day. Unfortunatly, I wasn't ready to get clean, so I needed something with a little kick to it, so I jumped on the program. Now here I am 7 yrs later stuck on the liquid handcuffs, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Every 5mg decrease since 75mg has been hellish to say the least. PLEASE DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AS I DID. This stuff is heavy duty addictive, and can kill a man with the simplest of drug interactions(xanax or clonopin) YES it is the lesser of two evils, but more and more I hear counselors say if you really want to kick, get back on dope. So please do all your research before you take the plunge, and please take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt! Thank you There is a reasonable (and referrenced) discussion of methadone maintenance on the main methadone page. Perhaps that could be moved here - or perhaps the methadone maintenance search could direct there.

I'm happy to continue dabbling, but to be fair I think even the remaining information in this stub is redundent. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Crumpled4350 (talkcontribs) 12:06, 27 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think this article has a whole lot of potential. I am wondering how I would go about requesting a name change. There does not appear to be an article titled Methadone Maintenance Treatment but there are other articles that refer to Methadone Maintenance Treatment and I think this article would be better named Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) rather than just Methadone maintenance. Anyone else have any thoughts on this? ȚttØØditre§ 22:06, 12 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I believe that the best name for this article would be Methadone Maintenance Programs as this would cover both treatment regimens, maintenance and reduction, which really do belong together as a page for each treatment would be OTT.Markdarrly (talk) 18:01, 8 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Surely this is the same thing as opioid agonist therapy, right? Methadone is one opioid used for the treatment of opioid use disorder, the other one is buprenorphine. Prezbo (talk) 23:07, 8 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
