merger
editSUPPORT : This page adds nothing not already in the article to be merged to. Joncnunn 18:42, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
OPPOSE: It is not true that this page adds nothing that is not already in the article about consolidated city-county. This is a disambiguation page. The term "metropolitan municipality" has at least two meanings. In the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, it is an urban community that is similtaneously a city and a county; or in the case of New York City, a city and five counties. In South Africa, "metropolitan municipality" is a completely different concept. There may be other uses of the term that have not been incorporated into the item. In any case, it has value as a disambiguation page and should be left alone. 6 May 2006, 2h27 (PDT)
OPPOSE : Metropolitan Municipality is an international concept, city-county only deals with the American case - though it may be similar to single-tier municipalities and such. WilyD 21:58, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
Independent cities
editIn general, this article is unsourced and suspect, but some statements regarding independent cities stand out as dubious:
- Like consolidated city-counties, single-tiers retain certain county functions that independent cities do not.... Name some county functions that independent cities do not have.
- A city that is not part of any county is not a metropolitan municipality but an independent city. By definition, a metropolitan municipality must be a non-sovereign entity which is simultaneously a municipal corporation and and an administrative division of the larger sovereign entity in which it is located. For this to make sense, we need both (1) a citation for that definition and (2) a showing that independent cities are not administrative divisions of the larger sovereign entity in which they are located (something that every independent city in which I've lived is).
Cleanup
editI have changed the template from {{disambig}} to {{disambig-cleanup}}. First, is this a disambiguation page or not? If so, the substantive information needs to be moved to the target articles. Either way, this article is full of statements that are unsourced, dubious, and smelling of original research, and it needs a top-to-bottom fact-checking. Doctor Whom 16:52, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
Rewrite
editI am going to tag this article as needing to be rewritten. Besides the lack of references and the accuracy dispute, neither of which has been addressed since December 2006, this article, apart from the South African section, seems to have very little to do with the ways in which the term is actually used and much to do with various editors' unsupported speculation on ways in which the term could be used. Also, the organization is terrible; the information on various countries should be separated rather than interleaved. Finally, various editors seem to think that United States and Canada use the same terminology when they do not; since when does the U.S. have jurisdictions officially known as regional municipalities?
