Modern Musicians by J. Cuthbert Hadden
editNote for future editors. A biography of Balling can be found in the book:
Modern Musicians by J. Cuthbert Hadden (First published by T.N.Foulis in 1913) - (my copy is the September 1918 Foulis reprint)
I'm using my copy but four public domain copies are available at the Internet Archive. Here's two of those:

I have the same image in my book and looking at the quality of the image in this article I'd better scan my book and replace the one here.

I went through the reference to the "Independent" of 6 June 1914 given in the sources for this article. The centrepiece was a big article by William Jennings Bryan on the Chatauqua movement, and also a minor mention of a certain recent assasination in Sarejevo. No mention of Balling at all, but perhaps I missed it. Fortunately I found something which might possibly help expand the mention of Balling's time as conductor of the Halle - notably the record of his view that the Halle orchestra should at least be partly funded municipally and his close connections with the city's German community, as well as the indication that even after World War II he was affectionately remembered by his audience there. It takes something for the citizen of a hostile regime to leave that sort of impression after a mere two year's stint in the city twenty years after your death. I can't think of even a footballer who has managed to do quite that in my home city, though I suppose time will prove me wrong. Ref, therefore https://gm1914.wordpress.com/2016/04/16/michael-balling-the-halles-pioneering-pre-war-conductor/Delahays (talk) 14:15, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
- This is Delahays replying to himself and insisting that he should apologise for misprinting the date of the "Independent" newspaper in the article bibliography. Since the assasination at Sarejevo occurred on 28 June, it must follow that the Independent which comes up from the biliography must be 6 JULY 1914. Apology hereby offered.Delahays (talk) 15:53, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
