Downs and Campbell
editWhoever wrote that Earl Campbell "punked" Michael Downs was being unfair; Campbell "punked" a LOT of players, both in college and the pros.
The only season both were in the Southwest Conference would have been the fall of 1977; at that time, Campbell was a senior and Downs was a freshman. Texas routinely beat Rice back in those days, and to expect a freshman on a weaker team to be able to stop an All-American and eventual Heisman Trophy winner is a bit much.
Plus, the author of that phrase gives no citation for it; it sounds more like it was written by a UT grad (and I say that as UT grad myself, class of '77).
