Critical about Bedouin?

edit

The sentence "Evenari was critical about the Bedouins, who largely failed to reuse the previous advanced approaches and did not achieve anything comparable in the drier parts of the Negev." appears to be wrong to me. There is no reference for this sentence. Having worked personally for Prof. Evenari, I know that he had respect for bedouins. He studied their language, frequently interacted with them, and was particularly fascinated about there knowledge of plants. I suggest erasing this sentence if it cannot be sufficiently verified that Evenari actually took this position 131.220.67.27 (talk) 08:42, 22 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Large parts copied & pasted from source?

edit
"His works on the Nabataeans runoff rainwater management was crucial ... [I cut most of it out here for this discussion] ... , and the phenomenon of "Tuleilat el-Anab", grape mounds.
Evenari himself cared about the cultural heritage of the Bedouin ... [ref: Evenari M (1974). "Desert Farmers: Ancient and Modern". Natural History 83(7):42-49.]"

These 2 paragraphs seem copied word for word from one source. The 1st paragraph I found unsourced, I googled and added an online source as ref:

"Michael Evenari" profile at Global Earth Repair Foundation, Port Hadlock, WA, 14 March 2022.

However, the content of the 2nd, sourced paragraph, can also be found word for word on the Global Earth Repair Foundation (GERF) website I had found. The pre-existing source, "Desert Farmers: Ancient and Modern", is referenced very summarily, w/o any online address, no access date, no author, and little else for online editors to work with. I guess it refers to a Natural History (magazine) article.

Needs reworking, esp. rewording. As of now we're infringing on real copyrights. I'm working from my cellphone, not easy; can someone with a PC find & ping the initial editor? Or just take over and reword it. Thanks, Arminden (talk) 16:13, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Done the rewording in Negev#History (see 2 specific sections) and Desert farming#Negev desert. Tired, someone please take it from here. Arminden (talk) 17:48, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
: The second source is here. There is one sentence on bedouins (p. 46); it only says that they were herders instead of farmers. Nothing about "fathers" or "sons". --DaWalda (talk) 20:11, 18 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Update: not Nabataean, but Byzantine

edit

Evenari's work did stand the trial of time, except for the date he and others proposed: the huge advance in rainwater harvesting, including runoff irrigation he used in his experimental farm, are of later, Byzantine date, not Nabataean. This should be researched and included here. I don't have the details in my head, maybe the Nabataeans did some major pioneering work, either before 106 or/and under the Romans, but the breakthrough and large-scale desert agriculture was a Late Byzantine phenomenon, see for instance Gaza wine. Check out what I've found & done at Negev#History (see 2 specific sections) and Desert farming#Negev desert. You can take it from here. Arminden (talk) 17:50, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
