Copying my comments from draft talk page

edit

I created a talk page for this article while it was still in my user space, going through the AfC process. I now have copied my comments from that talk page to here, below. Peter Chastain [habla, por favor] 23:07, 23 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

This page should not be speedy deleted because...

edit

I just created this stub and anticipate that it will be expanded in the near future. Given that I have already given one reference (from the George Lucas Educational Foundation website), along with wikilinks to Pritchard's role in the feature film Happy and his connection to social emotional learning, I would think that his notability has been established. I think he has written at least one other book, besides the one that I listed in the bibliography, and it is my understanding that there is a Time article about him. --Peter Chastain (talk) 14:46, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

He also reportedly has guest-appeared in a few old TV shows (Taxi, et al) and has produced programs aired on PBS. Peter Chastain (talk) 15:31, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Article title

edit

As Jack of Oz pointed out on his talk page, it is a bit tricky to pin down just what Pritchard is. This article should probably be re-named. Since he did some stand-up in the 1980s, while he was employed as a probation officer, we could probably call him a stand-up comedian, but that doesn't adequately describe his current activities, speaking and running (?) his foundation. "Motivational speaker" seems a bit too generic. Peter Chastain (talk) 22:52, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ewok's voice?

edit

IMDB lists a number of credits for "Michael Pritchard." It is not clear to me how many of these are the person who is the subject of this article. Wookieepedia identifies a Michael Pritchard (whose photo matches our subject) as appearing (or being heard) in two Ewok movies, but I have not added that to this article, as those sources are not considered reliable for WP articles. Re-submitting

edit

I think I am done with this article for now. I am busy with real life and never intended to create anything more than a very small stub. I got started with this when I saw Pritchard on our local PBS channel and wanted to look up more about him on Wikipedia. IMO, the article has now established notability (but I thought that before it got speedy-nominated the first time). For me, the main unresolved issue is what should be the title of the article. On further consideration, I agree with Jack of Oz, who renamed it "Michael Pritchard (comedian)" in the DAB page, so I have moved this page accordingly. Peter Chastain (talk) 03:44, 17 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
I dunno... It seems to me that he is incidentally a comedian and primarily a youth advocate and counselor. Apparently, though I have not found any RS for this, he has been involved with raising a lot of children that are not his. Peter Chastain (talk) 23:34, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Reaction/Criticism?

edit

Looking at some of Pritchard's short videos that are directed to parents, I find it conceivable that other child experts might find some of his solutions a bit too facile (easier said than done?), and when I see (e.g., in the Happy movie) school assemblies where he invites students to bare their soul about what it is like to be bullied, which seems to have great emotional impact on everyone, I wonder whether there are dangers to this approach. Apart from a generally laudatory tone in news coverage, and an even more laudatory tone in web sites connected to Prichard, I have not seen any notable reactions, critical or favorable. If any such analysis exists, we should include it in the article. Peter Chastain (talk) 23:34, 18 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Disproportionate emphasis on Pritchard's reaction to Bernie Ward arrest?

edit

In my talk page, JSFarman (Julie) wrote, "... I'm curious ... about the section Reaction to Bernie Ward's arrest and conviction. I don't understand why it's so prominent given Pritchard's accomplishments. ..." I believe Pritchard's comments give us insight into his world-view: compassion and support for a friend (encouraging Ward to take responsibility and seek redemption in prison) and a passionate advocacy for children and concern for the effects of child sexual exploitation, so I think the section would probably be appropriate in a larger article about Pritchard. Quite frankly, my other reason for including the section was that the article had already been rejected twice for non-notability, and I was getting desperate for verifiable information from sources not connected to Pritchard and his foundation. Many of his accomplishments are referenced in IMDB, which is problematic both because IMDB is not generally a RS and because I don't know how to verify that a particular Michael Pritchard is the same person as the subject of this article. The article needs more material, IMO, and I hope someone can fill in the blanks. BTW, thanks, Julie, for adding some badly needed references.
