Montgomery Burns

edit

The section on his relationship to the character Burns plagiarizes multiple lines from the NY Times article listed as a source. For example, from the Wikipedia article, "The joke, of course, is that Sandel is the anti-Burns: a moral philosopher who has devoted his life to pondering what is the right thing to do." From the NY Times article, "The joke, of course, is that Mr. Sandel ... is the anti-Burns, a moral philosopher who has devoted his life to pondering what is the right thing to do." Another line in the Wikipedia article says, "he shares a receding hairline with the evil-minded cartoon character." The NY Times article says that Sandel, "shares a receding hairline with the evil-minded cartoon character." 76.202.235.7 (talk) 00:25, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Could someone who's taken Moral Reasoning 22 please please fix this page up? Matthewmeisel

I have taken MR 22. The article looks a bit better now. Any specific issues you have or questions you want answered? Rlove 20:33, 25 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I’m a Harvard undergrad who was taken Prof. Sandel’s wildly popular and populated “Justice” class. A site with interactive lecture blogs that I found of great use for the duration of the class and in studying for the final was the following: http://www.thefinalclub.org/blogs/fall2007/Justice/. I also think the lecture notes are pretty interesting for anyone interested in Sandel’s area of work.

Anyone can read and contribute to the commentary of the texts on the site. If you read through a lecture or two and agree, I'd encourage someone with more Wikipedia clout than myself to post on the actual Sandel page. Let me know what you all think. I'd love to hear your thoughts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bbrasky100 (talkcontribs) 17:17, 19 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Removed category: Jewish Philosophers

edit

I removed this category as I found no evidence that he would be of a Jewish origin. --Mohsen (talk) 12:23, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't know how to revert that (and I'm not really bothered enough to figure it out) but he's definitely Jewish. See article/picture here (Sandel is in the middle): http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2007/12/5/summers-sandel-usher-in-hanukkah-snow/ Also an interview with Sandel here: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/episodes/august-17-2007/michael-sandel/3776/ Anyway this was a 2 minute google search. Suggest that, if anyone cares, Sandel be relisted as a Jewish philospher. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.97.80.100 (talk) 01:11, 17 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Montgomery Burns?

edit

Since anonymous IP editors are treated like pond scum when it comes to altering Wiki biographies of living persons, here's an attempt to discuss the following before entering it into the record:

"According to a well-worn urban legend, Sandel was the inspiration for the character of Montgomery Burns in The Simpsons....There is a certain physical resemblance. (Several Simpsons writers took the Justice course as undergraduates, and presumably basing such an amoral villain on someone so concerned with morals was part of the joke.)

Why are there sections in Spanish? Don't those belong on a Spanish Wikipedia page? 75.141.118.243 (talk) 03:02, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

This guy is a professor???

Having seen him leading a (televised) debate I can only conclude: Stick to your books mate, don't go on TV, don't go on TV, and whatever you do, don't go on TV. On the other hand, maybe you are being used. 1812ahill (talk) 00:42, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Removed something that was added to the first paragraph after the fact, and simply argues with Sandel's ideas rather than sheds light on anything. It was badly worded and it was not even sourced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.14.229.150 (talk) 14:03, 26 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Question: Do audio talks at public institutions, belong in the section "External Works"? I would like to add this lecture somewhere, because it is an important contribution to understanding his thoughts: http://www.americanacademy.de/videoaudio/michael-sandel-trump-populism-future-democracy/ Michael Sandel: Trump, Populism, and the Future of Democracy, held on 10 April 2018 My2100 (talk) 11:44, 21 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

I have not listened to it, but from what you say it sounds very appropriate. Text, video, and audio each appeal to different people. -Lopifalko (talk) 12:06, 21 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Becker

edit

Changed the reference to Gary Becker's ersatz Nobel Prize to its correct name. When it is presented in fast telegraphed form, "Nobel winner" grants that person a high stature and an unassailability, which means that the section is about Sandel criticizing someone with high and unassailable stature. When the name of the prize is changed to be accurate, and its history is acknowledged, the connotations become accurate. In case you think the edit reflects a point of view, calling Becker a Nobel winner reflected a point of view in the first place.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 8.39.136.249 (talk) 18:20, 18 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
