Wooldridge and Costello

edit

The following, which I changed some time back, has just been reinstated:

  • Ironically, the man who would replace Wooldridge as deputy leader, Peter Costello, not only did not succeed in his ambitions to become leader but also became the party's longest-serving deputy leader.

The bit about him not succeeding in his ambition to become leader is (a) irrelevant in this context, but more importantly, (b) an incorrect telling of history. He had the opportunity to become leader, probably unopposed, after Howard was defeated in 2007, because he'd long been seen as the heir apparent, but he CHOSE not to make himself available. Whatever ambition he may have had up till then to become party leader clearly dissipated. It wasn't as if he tried and failed. He didn't even try. So to say he didn't succeed in his ambitions is clearly wrong. But whether it's right or wrong, it's irrelevant here anyway, so should go.

The "ironically" does relate to his becoming the party's longest-serving deputy leader after Wooldridge, so that should remain. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 16:58, 24 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
