'midbrain' and 'mesencephalon' are the same thing --

Categorization
editShould this be in Category:Brainstem instead of in Category:Cerebrum? This would be consistent with the list of regions in the human brain. Courtland 03:45, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

diagram?
editThis article may be too technical for most readers to understand.(September 2010) |
Can the caption of the lower half of the diagram at the upper right corner of the page (the "coronal section") be clearer as to the orientation, that is, which sides of the diagram are front/back, left/right and/or top/bottom? Thank you. 38.100.34.2 23:19, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Cerebral Peduncle
editThis part is written so poorly, I'm unable to clean it up myself. Can someone please have a look at it? Preferably with a sturdy broom.
I would like to second that! This section is very poorly written and needs to be reviewed and revised to be understandable. English, people! Adamlankford (talk) 23:05, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Hard To Understand
editI'm just trying to review over my psychology notes quickly and this article is incredibly difficult to understand. Way too many scientific words used that don't link to explaining articles. Is it possible we could dumb this article down a bit? Predator47 (talk) 19:23, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Mesencephalon → Midbrain — Should we make the title of this article less technical, or is that not necessary? Bwrs (talk) 06:21, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support - Suggested title is more descriptive, and Wikipedia prefers common names to scientific names according to WP:COMMONNAME. Not only that, but midbrain is widely used in a scientific context. Midbrain is just easer to understand. Just make sure to capitalize the "m" o.k.? --WikiDonn (talk) 21:27, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support. Midbrain has 33 occurrences in the Corpus of Contemporary American English (of which 11 in the "academic" section alone) and 33 in the British National Corpus. Mesencephalon has one occurrence in the COCA and none in the BNC. Thus, WP:COMMONNAME applies. ― A._di_M.3rd Dramaout (formerly Army1987) 21:52, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- Support Google Scholar finds 40,100 hits for mesencephalon, but 349,000 for midbrain. Google Books (mostly textbooks) has 369 for mesencephalon and 456 for midbrain. Anthony (talk) 22:39, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Request for expansion
editThis article gives an adequate treatment of the origin and structure of the midbrain, but needs more information on its functions. Bwrs (talk) 06:25, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

what is the structure between the rostral portion of midbrain and the posterior pituitary?
editAt the side of the section of this article titled, 'Cerebral peduncles', there's a picture (for some reason? although it doesn't seem to relate to cerebral peduncles.) labeled, "Brain anatomy – forebrain, midbrain, hindbrain", and in that picture in teal color there's a linear structure between the midbrain and the pituitary. It does not seem to me that it is simply a 'part' of the midbrain. I've seen that same structure shown but not defined in other pictures on the internet, also. Does that structure have a name? A couple of suggestions and a question
edit1. Cleanup the use of solo hyphens where dashes or colons are needed.
2. The first sentence of the second paragraph under Midbrain#Structure does not belong there; so, it should be deleted or moved.
3. Is the midbrain in fact associated with vision and hearing, as the top of the article claims? The visual cortex and the auditory cortex are located in the cerebrum, not in the midbrain. 2A0D:6FC2:6A92:3F00:0:0:0:5F9 (talk) 10:00, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
