Gilbert Plass and Mikhail Budyko

edit

Gilbert Plass is known to be the first scientist who did detailed calculations about an expected warming due to an increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by using a computer in the year 1956. In the same year Budyko published is famous book Heat Balance of the Earth's Surface. Does anyone know if Plass used the information provided by Budyko for his calculations or did they publish their insights independent from each other? --Hg6996 (talk) 13:29, 11 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

At the beginning of his 1956 publication, Budyko outlined the significance of the work from his perspective:

Investigations of the heat balance at the earth's surface are now occupying an important place in all hydrometeorological disciplines…. The main purpose of these investigations is the study of the causal principles which determine the meteorological and hydrological regimes in various geographical regions which could be used for the forecasting and calculation of important hydrometeorological processes and phenomena. (Ref 34, p. 3)

This work garnered favorable attention for Budyko both within the Soviet Union and beyond.

Original research

edit

To make this edit the user did their own analysis of citations in a 2015 study and concluded that the oldest citation in the 2015 study is - necessarily - the oldest of all publications everywhere. That's an assumption on the user's part, and relying on their flawed analysis and assumptions are a big reason why we don't allow WP:Original research. Maybe this guy did do the first study. Maybe he didn't. All we know for sure is that its the oldest one on this point cited in the 2015 paper. Mabye for some reason the 2015 authors didn't want to include an even earlier paper. we just don't know. If our text is going to say he did the first study it has to pass WP:VERIFICATION without editors resorting to assumptions or personal knowledge and for that we need an WP:RS that says this guy did the first such study.
Note, this is an example of an ongoing interaction problem described here. Take note I have not attempted or challenged inclusion of this material in substance, just that it follow the RSs. Still needs work. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 23:38, 2 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
