I understand that I am new to wikipedia and do not fully comprehend the intracacies involved. However, it is my understanding that photos produced by the U.S. governemtn and photos of U.S. National mMonuments which are owned by the U.S. government (regardless who designed the monument) are public domain. Please help me uinderstand if this is not the case. If it were not the case, photos of the statue of liberty could not be used because the U.S. government did not design it. Photographs produced by US government employees in the course of official duties are, in most cases, public domain. However, a photograph of a copyrighted work, regardless of the photograph's provenance, is subject to the sculptor's copyright as a representation of the sculptor's work and may not be used on Wikipedia except under fair use. The Statue of Liberty is long out of copyright. This restriction applies to original works of sculpture, and because Wikipedia content is freely licensed, care must be used in posting photographs of recent sculptural works.
