Name of article?
editWikipedia "house style" doesn't seem to like capitalised titles. Should we MOVE this to Milton Keynes grid road system? (as per Milton Keynes redway system). --Concrete Cowboy 23:29, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Structure of article
editThe major routes/minor routes seemed a good idea when we discussed the idea, but I'm not sure that it works in reality. Is there any support for "all the H roads 1-10, then all the V roads 1-11"? --Concrete Cowboy 23:29, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- Yea if you want to rearrange it into Hs and Vs then do so, keep the same text though. BTW its the V6 that runs under the aquaduct, not the V7. If you think about it the V7 runs past Stantonbury, the V6 is where the H2 ends. Also good news the council who have been battling with MKP for the last year or two are now trying to get the Partnership's expansion group disbanded and replaced with a more locally democratic organisation. - Bye the way I wouldn't class the H4 or H7 as a minor grid road. I thing the only ones that should be minor are the H1, H2, V1, V2, V3, V5, V9. there is also an H4 Dansteed Way article.
- I'm afraid I have to do what concrete cowboy often does and question the H4s notability. Don't get me wrong I love the road, it runs straight behind my house, and it isn't minor no, but it isn't major in the same way as say the V6 is either. I might hesitently suggest merging that article into the H4 part of this one. Tom walker 17:23, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Include summary of the main articles
editI've tried including a short para on the V6. I think it works better than just a one line link and it is more consistent with the Wiki style. Does it work? Is it too short? --Concrete Cowboy 13:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- It should be shorter than the paragraphs for those that don't have articles, or rather those should be longer. Yea a short bit is good but for the H6, H9, H10, V6 and V8 I'd rather see a fully fleshed-out article. Tom walker 15:17, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Too much information?
editIn an earlier edit, I added material about roads crossed. I'm inclined to take this out as it just duplicates the table. How about listing districts served instead? Example, "V4 serves Stony Stratford and Galley Hill, WEA and Fullers Slade, WEA and Kiln Farm, WEA and Two Mile Ash, Crownhill and Great Holm etc etc. Comments? --Concrete Cowboy 13:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- That might be a bit long for some, especially the V4 and H8 which are the longest ones. Maybe just the major estates, for the V4 say Stony, TMA, Loughton and Shenleys, The Bowl, Denbigh, Bletchley and Fenny? Also for the H7 and others perhaps inlcude detail on thier futures ie extensions and of the city streeting of the H7s westermost section. Tom walker 15:17, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. It's a lot of graft so we'll just have to build it up as we have time.
- By the way, the V4 officially stops at Denbigh North. Watling Street sidesteps into Denbigh West (front of Marshall) and continues on down through Fenny. But it's no longer the V4. (Same thing in Stony - the Roman Watling Street becomes the High St but the V4 veers away along the old Stony bypass.) --Concrete Cowboy 17:35, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hate to be all correct-ish - but despite what the maps say if you go down to fenny the signs (some new) still read Watling Street V4 and the lampposts carry codes like V4 23 FS (I know how sad it is that I know that). On the other hand Queen Eleanour Street, whilst built like a grid road, isn't, and isn't the V4. Its just a bypass (hence name, other town-ish lighting and 1-2-3 numbering, no second carriageway reservation etc). Tom walker 20:31, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

- I think we would have a real problem justifying individual grid road articles as being notable. Ok, I suspect that there are articles about the colour of Mr Spock's socks in different episodes but you could maybe argue that this takes careful research and is not easy to find without spending hours shuttling the DVD back and forth. So far, the info in the grid road articles is just a verbal description of what anybody can see on a map. I think we are descending into serious trivia if we have an article about each road. In my opinion, the ones done already should be deleted. You can guess what I think about a list of roundabout names. It seems to me that the system and its design concepts are notable, even the methods of construction &mdash but the details of which road goes where and passes what are train-spotter level. Are there a "roads" or "civil engineering" portals so we could get an external opinion? --Concrete Cowboy 11:26, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
- Firstly can I just say I'm a bit offended because I actually am a trainspotter in the sense that I am a rail enthusiast and do spot trains. Secondly, I don't think many of them are notable but I stick to those five major ones being. I think thier articles should cover a bit more than they do at present - its just if thier all in here this will be too big. There are road transport portals but I don't know thier names. Map
editI think a map of the grid would help... I think we could probably use a rendered one from the openstreetmap, though the OSM needs a little work yet before all the streets are there... If anyone reading this lives nearby and has a gps unit, they can help with this... I might get round to it eventually, but am being kept busy with my area of the world at the moment.. C2r
- Basically, you go out with the GPS, and have it track your route. Then drive/cycle/walk paths - in this instance MK's grid. You then upload the tracks to OpenStreetMap, where they can be tagged as roads and named etc.
- You can then use Osmarender to generate a rendered SVG image of the area - thus creating a free map image to put on wikipedia.
- Much of the main grid of MK is already done: here - it looks nicer when viewed with osmarender than the default web page viewer at that zoom level.
