Who manufactures the Clubman?

edit

According to Template:Infobox automobile: "The manufacturer field states the company, division, or subsidiary responsible for the vehicle's engineering and development, which is not necessarily the entity assembling or marketing the vehicle."

As far as I know, MINIs are engineered and developed by BMW, so the manufacturer field should state "BMW" and not 'Mini (BMW)'. MINI is not a company, division or subsidiary - it is just the marque or brand that they are sold under.

I edited the templates in this article yesterday to reflect this understanding, but today they were all reverted back. Does anyone (including Heat fan1) have an opinion on this, or a reason to believe that Mini is more than just a brand name? -- de Facto (talk). 19:18, 1 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Technically you are right - it is BMW (UK) Manufacturing Limited that owns the Oxford plant.[1] and the Mini website is clearly marked as operated by BMW (UK) Limited.[2] It's interesting to note that some Mercedes-Benz car now have the correct company listed such as Mercedes-Benz C-Class. There does seem to be some inconsistency in how the field is used, but I think I see what you're saying. Seat Leon, for example, lists SEAT as the manufacturer instead of VW. Lexus cars seem to list Lexus as the manufacturer instead of Toyota, and the Alfa Romeo Guilia lists Alfa Romeo instead of Fiat Chrysler. On the other hand, Daimler AG cars all seem to list the parent company.
Now, I think the distinction you're making is that MINI is not a legal entity, while Alfa Romeo and SEAT are. On the other hand, Lexus is a brand, and Smart Automobile does seem to be a legal entity. I interpreted the instructions, which includes "You may show the parent company of a given manufacturer in parentheses after the manufacturer entry, if applicable." to suggest that the brand should be listed. I think the instruction on the template should be clarified, so I'll start a new conversation there. -- heat_fan1 (talk) 20:34, 1 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
