Summer Street is the main street of Orange, New South Wales in Australia. It forms part of the Mitchell Highway passing through the city. Orange is a regional centre with population of about 40,000. The naming of the street is quite ironic given the fact that cold icy blasts of wind can and do blow up the street at all times of year including in the summer season. The street is oriented east-west meaning that one side is sunny and the other side is not. Orange also has three other streets named Autumn Street, Winter Street and Spring Street. Summer Street is also the location for two well known Orange parks: Robertson Park in the central business district and Cook Park to the west of the main shopping centre. Orange High School (New South Wales) is situated at the western end of Summer Street, though actually on the corner of Woodward Street and Coronation Drive. The XPT Sydney–Dubbo crosses at the railway level crossing at the eastern end of Summer Street twice a day. Summer Street was previously configured with a single traffic lane in each direction and painted centre line and rear to kerb angle parking, left, straight and right hand turn lanes at all traffic light controlled intersections, and concrete footpaths; however, after reconstruction in the early 1990s, the configuration was changed to incorporate a central paved and planted median strip along the entire length of the central business district, with two traffic lanes in each direction, paved parallel parking bays, and widened paved footpaths.
