Video overview

Any objections to me adding an external link to a video overview of this project? http://www.educatedearth.net/video.php?id=3978 Nova2k9 17:15, 17 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nova2k9 (talkcontribs)

Thrust:Weight ratio

edit

So wait a second... if the engines are supposed to produce 15 tons EACH (in afterburner), and the aircraft grosses at 8 tons MAX, that means that this jet will supposedly have a minimum thrust:weight ratio of 3.75:1 - more than double that of an unloaded F-22 with hardly any fuel. I know it's a technology demonstrator, but even still it seems rather absurd. 15 tons of thrust TOTAL is much more plausible. I suspect a translation error may be at fault here. 72.219.190.143 (talk) 21:51, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

This does fail the smell test - this indicates the engine's thrust is in the 49kN/5 ton range, while other links say "comparable to the M88" which is 50kN dry/75kN afterburning. - The Bushranger One ping only 22:34, 15 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Update Picture

edit

Seeing as the ATD-X has passed the conceptual stage and is in current development, would it not be fitting to replace the current blueprint picture with a testing model? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.111.138.143 (talk) 13:03, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunatly, unless there would be a free image of the model, the odds of it remaining would be terribly slim. There was a debate over using the Chinese Internet-leaked photos of the Chengdu J-20 that included a serious proposal of using an image somebody had (badly) sketched on the back of a napkin instead, in the infobox, just because it was a free image(!!) - while that (thankfully) didn't happen, the images in question were deleted; it was however replaced by artwork, and there are still no actual photographs of the J-20 on that page (despite the assurances that led to deletion of the images that "free photos will doubtless be available very soon, so..."). TLDR: Any fair-use images of testing models would be round-filed in short order. - The Bushranger One ping only 18:07, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The meaning of 心神/"Shinshin"

edit

It seems like this word is often very wildly mistranslated. Literally it's a combination of "heart" and "god/s", so it's commonly assumed to have something to do with god or the divine, but that is not what the word means. "Shinshin" actually just a somewhat obscure/poetic word that means "one's mind" or "one's spirit". Here's a Japanese dictionary link for reference: http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/leaf/jn2/114609/m0u/ You can Google Translate the definition if you can't read Japanese, but it literally just says "Heart. Spirit." — Preceding unsigned comment added by LarboardMalarkey (talkcontribs) 04:40, 22 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

The dictionary states that it means こころ (in Chinese characters, 心, heart or mind) or 精神 (spirit). The word "心神" (Shinshin) is not used in everyday speech, but it comes from an episode by the master of Japanese painting, Taikan Yokoyama, who painted many pictures of Mount Fuji, as follows. "In an old book, Fuji is called 'Shinjin'. When I look up to Fuji, I feel a sense of refreshing emotion, and I feel that it is indeed the soul of Japan." The nickname is imbued with the meaning of Japan's soul, that is, to create Japan's own stealth aircraft. citation 10

edit

i clicked this citation and it isn't a dead link, but it has nothing to do with this project either. it's about a missile defense system. is there a real link/citation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.49.6.225 (talk) 11:14, 15 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Development Status

edit

The article introduction ends by stating that the maiden is scheduled for 2015. Well, considering 2015 is very close to being over, it might be helpful to either update this fact with a date, or delete it until better information becomes available. AFAIK, no test flights have happened yet, and I can't find any articles giving a definite timeline. If anyone has better info on this, ze should append it. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.133.5.250 (talk) 10:20, 27 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have added a source to the lead that gives an 2016 Q1 target for the first flight. MilborneOne (talk) 12:26, 27 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Suspended & looking for new partners in US or UK =

edit

The MoD (Ministry of Defense) is denying cancellation & attempt to MoDify the program, as seen below, but stalled for sure. "Earlier this week, the MoD denied that a decision has been made to scrap the indigenous development of the F-3. “We are considering domestic development, joint development and the possibility of improving existing aircraft performance, but we have not yet come to any decision,” a MoD spokesperson said. However, it is now increasingly likely that Japan’s Acquisition Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) will not receive funds for pursuing the domestic F-3 development route, as I noted yesterday:" [1]
