Joke

"Our Stamens are a Pistil" is a joke on an old-fashioned type of store-window sign: "Our [whatever they sell] are a pistol!". "Pistol", as in "gun", was a term that also means "huge success". The twist is that pistils and stamens are the sexual reproductive organs of flowers, and the sign is at a botanical gardens. Yes, the joke is oblique, obscure, and not really 'funny' (subject to 'the Dennis Miller ratio',) - but that's entirely the point: Lisa finds it humourous, and no one else is remotely interested."

Well, that's entirely incorrect, which is interesting. "Pistol" as slang referred to a person, and it mean someone who was bright, quick, or energetic. (Implying hot as a pistol or quick as a pistol.) It later became a more generalized term for someone who was a lot of fun, or personable/funny/enjoyable to be around. "You should invite Betty over for dinner, that gal's a real pistol!".

So the joke is simply a play on words: they're saying "our flowers are a lot of fun to be around!". CouplandForever (talk) 04:31, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Oh dear. The first explanation is entirely coherent with the second here. The use of pistol is the same in both cases really, with synonyms such as fiery, successful, energetic, quick and bright. How dumb to argue against the same basic premise. I agree with the first description anyway, the extra dimension of using pistil as pistol means half the joke is based on saying 'a cock is a dick', whilst it also implies their stamens are awesome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.137.78.158 (talk) 22:44, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
