It's great that people are so interested in documenting the accident. This is encyclopedic information that belongs in Wikipedia.

It's a little disappointing that they show no interest in learning anything else about Monju. A sound decision on nuclear issues is based on knowledge, and Wikipedia is an excellent place to share that knowledge.

Food for thought? Andrewa 06:35, 5 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

If this thing starts back up by the end of the year, I'll make sure to add more myself. -Theanphibian (talkcontribs) 13:14, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hey, I know! Why don't you contribute some info about Monju? This is Wikipedia, after all. -Amake 13:44, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Is Monju operational? Last time I checked, it's still not functional. In vessel transfer machine fell while replacing, and then practically every effort to pull it out has failed. Due to the nature of SFR, you are not supposed to breach the wall (or the liquid sodium will be exposed to the air, resulting in gigantic explosion). There has been total of 24 rescue efforts up till now, which has all failed miserably. I have to wonder why this portion is not even mentioned in the entry as of yet. 67.255.19.45 (talk) 05:04, 10 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
According to this blog post, the current state of the reactor is very vulnerable to earthquakes and the responsible manager has killed himself. A new attempt at recovery is planned for this month, or later[1]. Isn't there any citable English-language source with more solid information? When I search for "Monju" most results are about a Bangladeshi woman who cut off her rapist neighbor's dick.--88.73.7.14 (talk) 10:42, 5 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Steel

edit

Text is self-contradictory, and I don't know enough to fix it. "...producing temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius. The heat was so intense that it melted several steel structures in the room" is just plain impossible: steel melts at well over a thousand degrees Celsius. One of those sentences is wrong. 50.46.102.164 (talk) 00:45, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

While steel may not melt into a liquid at temperatures less than 1000 C, it can soften significantly at lower temperatures, leading materials made with steel to sag or deform. Deformation (engineering). This effect is believed to have been a factor in the Collapse of the World Trade Center, for example. Therefore I think the material is probably correct, except that the term "melt" is inexact. I'll see if I can track down the sources and improve it.   Will Beback  talk  01:30, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
I found a source which says steel parts were "warped" from the heat. I'll change the text to use that word instead.   Will Beback  talk  01:30, 22 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

electricity generated only for one full hour ?

edit

I really can't believe that: "In the two decades since the reactor started tests in 1991, the atomic energy agency has managed to generate electricity at the reactor only for one full hour." see http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/18/world/asia/18japan.html?_r=1&pagewanted=all - Start 29th Aug. 1995, Accident 8th Dec. 1995 - I wonder what happended in those 3 months? --Fmrauch (talk) 13:44, 15 July 2012 (UTC)Reply
