Delete hobo reference

edit

The hobo reference should be deleted as there is nothing elsewhere that says the monkey fist is used as an hobo symbol. 98.247.77.63 (talk) 07:49, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Illegal in Canada?

edit

It would be nice to see an article talking about the legality of possession in Canada. That sounds like a very strange law Potatoj316 (talk) 03:55, 21 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

They're commonly made with a steel ball inside and used as a very effective weapon. That's why they're illegal in some areas. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.166.127.54 (talk) 17:16, 27 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Heavy Core?

edit

Every boatswain I've ever met says that a monkey's fist should never be tied with a weight inside since a thrown lead weight can be very dangerous. Also, anyone who has ever tied one would know that it would be very difficult to include anything on the inside, it is pretty crowded in there. 138.163.0.41 (talk) 21:38, 11 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Monkey fists are commonly made with objects inside as a core. One application is main parachute deployment handles in skydiving. The monkey fist is constructed of paracord on a wood, plastic or foam core. Titaniumlegs (talk) 20:32, 11 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Rewrite this sentance

edit

I can't even follow this sentance. Please rewrite it so that it actually makes sense and isn't a run-on. "A monkey's fist can be used on two ends of a tow lines of one side a fish net which is then thrown from one trawler to another, allowing the net to be cast and set between two boats so the trawl can be used between the two, in pair trawling[1] where the tow or catch is negotiated between both parties." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.218.219.22 (talk) 20:19, 10 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Monkey fist knot

edit

Although it resembles a monkeys fist, It is so named because like a monkey, it never lets go. It’s the only knot that will hold a round object.

It was also hung from trees around hobo encampments to denote fraternity or friendly nearby towns. Cheech 69.113.6.162 (talk) 19:35, 19 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tying instruction for flat tying does not agree with Step 1 image

> coiled from outside inwards, in all three set of rings,

The bottom set of rings is tied from inside outward towards the end emerging in the top left corner. Anaran (talk) 12:08, 3 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
