Western Equivalent

edit

I would like to know why the article switched the equivalent western sign from Leo to Gemini? It quite doesn't make sense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 187.20.141.53 (talk) 17:54, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Personality

edit

The Monkey personality section looks like it's been copied from another website and thereore needs major cleanup. Thelb4 15:28, 13 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Actually, if it's been copied from another site (which it does look like), then it's copyright violation. --Bryan Nguyen | [[User talk:Bryan Nguyen|Talk]] 00:42, 27 November 2005 (UTC)Reply
The section starting "No task is too great for the clever Monkeys" came from rainfall.com. In fact, great chunks of all the Chinese zodiac articles came from doublesign.com. All twelve aren't exactly encyclopedic. Can these these lists of characteristics - Always neatly dressed, women born in the year of the Monkey are particular about their appearance, especially their hair styles. By the way, overusing cosmetics may make their skin rough, because it is easy for them to get allergic reactions - be considered remotely verifiable or as established fact? Source found: [1]. Note: The information came from a book titled "The Hidden World Of Birthdays" By Judith Turner. Tearlach 20:04, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
And the rest of it from here - Source: The Handbook of Chinese Horoscopes by Theodora Lau Published by Arrow Books Limited Tearlach 04:56, 8 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Personality info should be toned down since it is mostly conjecture and possibly entirely conjecture. However, it is fun to think about and has a tradition, so it has a place in an encyclopedia. Hu 23:15, 4 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

As stated above, the personality part was extreme and full of conjecture. In general the description had an angry tone to it:

"Although these people are trustworthy and unlikely to hurt someone out of spite, they would never let people escape if they have behaved badly or damaged a Monkey's reputation. Their stamina and determination to achieve their main goals can make these people appear vain or manipulative. It means that people born under this sign should be careful so they do not damage their friendships. It is important to remember for these persons that it would be wiser sometimes not to pursue their goals and simply let things pass.

Monkeys have flexible principles and serene self-confidence so they are completely content; but they usually manage to complicate the lives of others. After yet another plan or project has gone wrong, they are seldom there to help clean up the disorder and confusion that they leave in their wake. Monkeys can handle that too; with their charm and persuasiveness they can make people believe that just knowing them is a privilege!"

It resembled a personal blog rant against someone. The Zodiac animal descriptions are usually generally upbeat and positive, with some negative aspects pointed out. --Archangel 09:03, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Uff da... Monkey is *worshipped* as "great sage, equal to heaven"? When I read Journey to the West, that honorific was a lot more satire than worship. To call this opening sentence simplistic is probably too charitable.

Chinese Character

edit

I thought the Chinese symbol for 'Year of the Monkey' was 申, as apposed to 猴, which just means 'Monkey'. I could be wrong though. Could somebody please verify which is correct. Sadako No Deshi 18:43, 18 July 2006 (BST)

The 猴 character is correct and is commonly used in Chinese calendars in use today. Ejproject (talk) 07:27, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

List of Celebrities Sign (Chinese zodiac)

edit

I vote for making a new article, List of Celebrities Sign (chinese zodiac) - with a list of famous persons of all signs (separeted by sign/element), something like the List of games Daniel Leite 04:25, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Since no one protested and I agree with you, I boldly went ahead and created the Category Category:List_of_Celebrities_(Chinese_Zodiac) and the subcategories for each sign. I'm currently adding the categories to the current Year of the Dog celebrities (I will remove the section afterwards, replacing it with a link).
Now, it would be great if you and all the other regulars (Maestro, VeronicaPR, IrishPearl etc.) would each take a Zodiac Sign and do the same, since it would take ages to do this alone. Teshik 12:34, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Split contested, candidate for deletion

edit

Hrmpf. In the very minute I finally got the Dog article finished, the new categories were put up into the Deletion candidates. Go here for details, and please tell if you want the categories kept, deleted, or if you got another suggestion entirely. I've stopped editing for now. Teshik 14:55, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Neutrality Issues

edit

The Monkey page has been input with comments made to favor the specific sign with opinions made on its superiority and other "positive" traits with the deletion of "negative" traits. This creates a misleading, biased, and less informative write-up of the true qualities of this sign. 68.34.93.159 07:32, 23 April 2007 (UTC) JeanReply

I have factual links that tell you the meaning of the Chinese zodiac Monkey, etc. They are not advertising anything personal. I feel they may help the site. If you do not believe so, please remove. They were previously posted on two articles. I want to combine them and post them on each horoscope, Including this one. Ariyen (talk) 13:27, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Stem is 'Black' or 'Positive'?

edit

In the 12 pages for the animals of the Chinese zodiac, this is the only one with a color instead of "positive" or "negative." In all other cases, the stem alternates from zodiac animal to zodiac animal and logically for Monkey, the stem should be "positive" since it comes between two "negative" signs. I'm going to assume that this is a typo and change it. If my assumption was wrong, I apologize. Interlingua 15:21, 14 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

History of Zodiac Sign use

edit

Would it be common to add a sentence on the use of zodiacs in Chinese history, its historical significance, and the role that the Monkey plays in Chinese mythology? This may already be included in a general "Chinese zodiac" page but it's not clear from the "Year of the Monkey" page. There should be a connection to the broader topic at hand, and make it clear that this is a subset of Chinese mythology. Ejproject (talk) 07:30, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
