Mont Blanc Tunnel and Mont Blanc Tunnel fire

edit

Note that the article mostly covers the tunnel fire. What about the tunnel itself?

  • My feelings exactly. I wanted to know about the engineering, design, and integration into the Eurpoean motorway system. The extensive information about the fire is interesting, but because it is so lengthy it should be broken into a seperate entry.--Black Orpheus 22:34, 29 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Quite agree. —Steve Summit (talk) 03:23, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I agree too. JCase 21:17, July 13 2006 (EDT)
  • Disagree, there is little information on the tunnel as it is, moving this would leave this article without any real information.
  • Perhaps when the article is sufficiently longer Rob.derosa 06:47, 5 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I agree even though there it little information about the tunnel without the information about the fire, especially as i to am researching into the engineering and design. Also with little information available people maybe more inspired to add some
  • I agree it's an important issue so it should have its own article Gelpiac 21:18, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I would suggest a page on Tunnel Fires in general. In recent years there have been fatalities in many tunnels (Tunnel / Year / Deaths) - links below are only to pages describing the fire.

CTRL Thames 2006 2

Degrave/Degreaves

edit

The truck driver's name is written in multiple ways throughout the article, which is accurate?--68.96.240.146 13:25, 12 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

You are right. If you google either name, you get many hits for each. Will try and look deeper. Lovellester 20:37, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

How many Deaths

edit

it says that 27 people died in their vehicles and 10 people died on foot, then says of the 50 people trapped only 12 lived, Where's the other guy?

Presumably the firefighter meantioned who died later on?

Separate Page, where have we got to?

edit

Don't think that a separate page would be helpful to readers. The information is an integral part of the tunnel's history. Best to put it here, if it gets too long then think again about new page, Lovellester 20:30, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Non-fire tunnel history

edit

Before exploring a split, it may be advisable to add info on the tunnel design and engineering as well as history prior to 1999. This info is already available in the French and Italian Wikipedia articles and should be translated from either or both. Then a split can be seriously considered... Ranma9617 03:39, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

As the one who posed the original question before I created an account, I do not support a split, but I am glad to see that more information about the tunnel itself has been added over the last year. Group29 20:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Through Which Mountain?

edit

The opening line says "near the Mont Blanc mountain" whereas the thrid sentence says the "Mont Blanc Tunnel runs beneath the mountain"... so does it go under Mont Blanc or not?

Disputed - Sprinkler system

edit

I can't find any mention in any documentation of an installed sprinkler system in the tunnel before 1999. 166.179.16.192 (talk)

There is mention of a pressurised fire service water main: http://www.atmb.net/atmb/en/tunnel/209/?id_article=745& —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.64.187.145 (talk) 00:25, 8 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

10 or 12 survivors?

edit

Regarding the 1999 tunnel fire, this article states there were 12 survivors, but the article dedicated to Pierlucio Tinazzi states 10, and a BBC news article on that page also says 10 people survived. So is there a clear figure? 94.192.52.244 (talk) 17:38, 14 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

An author of the Pierlucio Tinazzi story just published a retraction. https://www.cjr.org/first_person/tinazzi-motorcycle-mont-blanc-tunnel-fire-rescue.php

Convictions

edit

Convictions and sentences are listed but what were the convictions for? Rsduhamel (talk) 05:45, 21 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree that it looks very weird at the moment without any justification for the convictions and given also that there is apparently not even certainty about what started the fire. AlexFekken (talk) 10:54, 15 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Separate article for fire?

edit

I think its time now that the 1999 fire had its own article - not least because as it stands, incorporating this incident with the tunnel itself means that the appropriate links and catagories are not appended to it. Mostly, though, an event of this magnitude and with such repercussions is sufficently important to warrant its own page. I'll make a start on my sandbox...unless someone else with better article writing cred and/or knowledge of the incident or subject would like to do so. Stinky Air

edit

From the article:

1980: An additional air shaft, 7 metres (23 ft) in diameter, is built to avoid the build-up of foul air at the French end of the tunnel.

Any ideas why there is stinky air building up at the French side? 132.3.65.79 (talk) 21:14, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Overlay

edit

From the article:

At this spot, it lies 2,480 metres (8,140 ft) beneath the surface, making it the world's second deepest operational tunnel[3] after the Gotthard Base Tunnel.

From the article about the Gotthard Base Tunnel:

It is the deepest railway tunnel in the world, with a maximum depth of 2,450 m (8,040 ft),[4] comparable to ...

This makes no sense. What is correct and what is wrong? Does anybody have additional evidence for the overlay of these two tunnels?

How comes there are no pictures of the drilling machine and works underground?

edit

Should be many pictures of the tunnelling as it when along. Weird that there are none? 2A00:23C7:2B13:9001:21A8:FA50:D92B:B041 (talk) 12:33, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
