Old comments
edit- Ah - so that would be an accurate rendition of the sound of Henri Rougier's Turcat-Mery crossing the finish line at the 1911 Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo? (Either that or it was mindless vandalism of our pristine Talk page - it's so hard to tell.) :-) SteveBaker 19:40, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Ford Motor Company
editWhy is Ford Motor Company mentioned in this article as a british company ?? As far as I know, Ford was ALWAYS an AMERICAN company, based at Dearborn, Michigan, USA. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.80.191.190 (talk) 11:31, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
It does not matter where the rally team is based. For example: in Formula One, Red Bull is austrian, Renault is french, Force India is indian, Mercedes is german, though they all are based in the UK. Ford is just so american marque as Mercedes is german, Peugeot is french, Honda is japan, etc... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.80.191.190 (talk) 11:50, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
A question
editHi, I'm a spanish wikipedia user, sorry for my english. A have a question, is really the third edition in 1924? I have references in 1923. Bye. --Jorjum (talk) 11:41, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Had a look and came up with these [1] and [2] but no 1923. Can you provide a link? Who won the even in 1923? Bjmullan (talk) 22:44, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- Its ok. I have a reference to a publication, but is likely to be a publishing error. The third edition is in 1924, I will correct the error in spanish wiki. Bye.--Jorjum (talk) 07:53, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Requested move

The result of the move request was: pages moved. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 00:01, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
- Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo → Monte Carlo Rally
- Rally Guanajuato Mexico → Rally Mexico
- Rallye de France - Tour de Corse → Tour de Corse
– These articles were recently moved by a user who does not engage in discussion but insists that these articles use the official names (actually, Monte-Carlo has a hyphen and México an accent). However, rally competitions are commonly referred to by their short names, and the official ones are rarely used even in the host countries. Prolog (talk) 16:15, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- Please move them. I hate it when people move an article without any discussion. Who the fuck has every heard of Rallye de France - Tour de Corse!!!!! Bjmullan (talk) 22:43, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
- Something similar happen in Commons with Rally France and Tour de Corse. --Jorjum (talk) 10:28, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

John Cooper
editIn the results for 1952, second place is credited to Stirling Moss/D. Scannell/John Cooper, which is correct. However, John Cooper's name is linked to the John Cooper of the Cooper Car Company, and that is incorrect. According to Sir Stirling's own book "All My Races", page 88, the John Cooper he co-drove the Monte Carlo Rally with in 1952 was the editor of Autocar, not the John Cooper of the Cooper Car company. Moss makes that quite clear in the text and the caption of the photo on that page showing them with the car says "John 'Autocar' Cooper" as well. Bill321 (talk) 14:03, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Fixed. Prolog (talk) 14:21, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

1949 & 1950 winners
editThe winning cars in 1949 and 1950 were Hotchkiss 686 GS models, not Hotchkiss-Grégoires. Having been misled by this in preparing a magazine feature, I have now corrected it. Heckmotor97 (talk) 12:22, 27 November 2019 (UTC)
Correct! I have made many more corrections as to specific car and driver data. Feel free to check these, may be I am making mistakes as well. One interesting thing I found was the participation of Jean Behra, the then unknown later formula 1 driver. His car was not the sporting Simca 8 coupe, but the regular model. Remarkable achievement!.Gallimons (talk) 06:46, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
Past winners 1911-1972, additional information
editI have researched some additional information on the participants, cars and itineraries of the Rallye. Some names were imcomplete or misspelled, some cars missed the type of car. I added starting numbers and license plates to identify more easily photographs of the participants. More importantly, in the early decades of the Rallye, the way to drive to Monte Carlo was often the most challenging part, so I added the place of departure. I am considering adding data on the passengers as well. This is just as important as the codriver, because points were given for more passengers. Finally - work in progress, so give me some time - I have tried to improve the information on female (lady) drivers and co-drivers. Nowhere in Motorsports, the role of women is so important as in the Rallye of Monte Carlo! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:1C02:2B22:F400:E9F0:B26A:30FE:6A8C (talk) 17:10, 26 November 2020 (UTC)
- It's good reasearch, you should consider changing the table layout to better impart the info. Best, Mr.choppers | ✎ 20:51, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- That is a good idea indeed, but I’m not that smart with tables in Wikipedia. Can anyone help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:1C02:2B22:F400:481:F0DE:A08B:6193 (talk) 23:38, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- There is no easy way to do it. Here is my proposal, only applied to 1911:
Year | Winner | Second | Third | ||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Drivers/Nationality | Car & Type | Starting # | License plate | Place of departure | Drivers/Nationality | Car & Type | Starting # | License plate | Place of departure | Drivers/Nationality | Car & Type | Starting # | License plate | Place of departure | |
1911 | Henri Rougier (F) | Turcat-Mery 25HP Double coupé | #1 | 793 WI | Paris | de Aspiazu | Gobron 40HP | Paris | Julius Beutler | Martini 28/35 HP | Berlin |
- It will take a minute to apply all the way up to 1972... If you like it I will be happy to apply it. This also has the advantage of showing pretty clearly what information is still missing. Best, Mr.choppers | ✎ 03:37, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
Yes, that will be very helpfull! And I agree, it is much more visible where informastion is still lacking. Bytheway, the information on the French language page is rather different, sometimes better. Also, the text in the introduction is much more comprehensive. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gallimons (talk • contribs) 13:26, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
History from 1911 on: Reconstruction of the story
editToday, I have added a main story on the prewar history of the Rally. Not a year by year summary, but an analysis of the changes from different aspects over the decades. Please feel free to contribute. I am planning to add a main story on the postwar era as well but have to do some research for that! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gallimons (talk • contribs) 16:33, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Gallimons: Nice - as per WP:STYLE I suggest holding back the superlatives ("brilliantly") and exclamation marks, otherwise it looks nice. Needs sources, too. Btw, why are the car names in prantheses in the table? It makes sense when in list form, but the table makes these things clear without. Best, Mr.choppers | ✎ 21:55, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- I have now added an overview of firsts and lasts. Because of the long history and many changes in format, I think this is an interesting way te represent remarkable developments. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gallimons (talk • contribs) 20:37, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- Still working on the article. I did some rearranging in chapter titles and chapters (new chapter 2). I would like to include many more photographs (already somewhere in wikipedia or available on the internet, but am not experienced how to do that. Can anyone help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gallimons (talk • contribs) 12:21, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
- I added a pic from 1933 and did some other layout and style edits (see WP:STYLE). There are tons of photos HERE, I am sure you can see how it works. To upload your own is possible, as long as you can figure out how to navigate copyright concerns. Best, Mr.choppers | ✎ 05:05, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you! I’m learning every day! I think the pictures are now an excellent illustration of the Monte story through the ages! Still working on more photo’s of the 1960/70/80s! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gallimons (talk • contribs) 18:41, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
I have added a chapter on remarkable drivers (with many appearances), which adds a colourful touch to the Monte story. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gallimons (talk • contribs) 18:50, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
I have added some pictures but there are problems with rights, so they will be removed. Anyone who can contribute to this article by adding wikimedia commons rights-free pictures: please help! I do not have a lot of experience on this mater and clearly rights are a complex matter!Gallimons (talk) 06:43, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
Surely this should be lowered to start class
editThe prose and general structuring of this article isn't at all encyclopaedic and it's in desperate need of a complete rewrite. While it does have references, it has far from enough and much of the article comes across as if it may be original research. Considering the importance of the event and the wealth of sources available it should be possible to get this article to good or even featured status with a concerted effort, but right now it's clearly in need of a well thought out restructuring and rewrite. Right now I'm not even sure where to start. I've removed some of the excessive images and added a cleanup template, but a lot more work needs to be done.
