- Not a problem; thank you for correcting it (None of the local historical sources I looked at knew or seemed to care what the original name in Dutch was. I knew someone here would). Daniel Case 14:28, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Writing in 1853 and published as a book of letters in 1855, Nathaniel Parker Willis wrote that there were two explanations for the name. One is as given above - it was the site of some brutal murders; the other, which he favored, is that it was named after an Indian chief who gave his life to save that of a white colonial women. His book "Out-doors at Idlewild; or, The Shaping of a Home on the Banks of the Hudson" is a 400 page description of the Moodna Creek area and of his home which he built there.
