Bank funding for mortgage loans
editIs this line definitely factually correct?
'capacities to tap cheaper international sources of funds for lending.'
Unlike building societies, UK banks are allowed to create bank credit and therefore do lend out their depositors funds but rather create new money on demand which is destroyed when the loan is paid back. Contrast this to a Building Society which is a true intermediary between savers and borrowers, lending it's savers deposits to borrowers at interest and making up any shortfall using the money markets. So with reference to the reason above cited as a explanation for the growth of the Bank mortgage lending, surely a bank doesn't need to borrow money to lend, it simply creates it.
Another (important) reason apparently not mentioned was the de-regulation in the 70s which allowed banks, previously prohibited from mortgage lending, to enter the market. Natyelverton (talk) 15:21, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
