Should "the monopoly guy" redirect to here? :68.126.214.146 (talk) 01:40, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
I just read the external link. Interesting read.
So, who is this J. Montgomery Burns fellow? Azure Haights 21:23, Nov 3, 2004 (UTC)
Uncle Moneybags
I always thought he was called Uncle Moneybags but maybe this is because Australia does not have Pennies nor use it as an alternative to cents.
No, it's not just an Australian thing. I'll accept that "Rich Uncle Pennybags" may have been this character's "official" name, but throughout my life, I've only heard him referred to as either "Mr. Moneybags" or "Mr. Monopoly." The latter nickname is especially prevalent in popular culture; when Jon Lovitz played the character in a 1986 SNL sketch, for example, he was referred to as "Mr. Monopoly," not "Rich Uncle Pennybags."
- For the sake of showcasing the opposite experience, I'll just chime in here and say that the only thing I ever heard was "Rich Uncle Pennybags" (or just "Uncle Pennybags"), until they changed the official name. Kairos 20:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
The original character is "Rich Uncle Moneybags". "Uncle Pennybags" was the name given to the character featured on Monopoly Jr. "Mr. Monopoly" is a name that was pulled out of someone's ass in the late 90's. Now it all makes sense, doesn't it? =] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.224.55.156 (talk) 17:26, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
I'm not entirely sure why his rechristening is being called unsuccessful, as in most parts of the world and on the internet, he is commonly known as Mr. Monopoly. Hell, I didn't even know he ever had a different name until 10 minutes ago. (Speaking of which... How'd I end up here starting from early history of christianity...?) Naturally, I'll change the line :) Mr. Gerbz (talk) 03:25, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
I believe this picture is incorrectly being attributed to Monopoly, it is quite clearly a copy of "Rich Uncle" a similar but distinct game that focuses on the purchase and sale of stock. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.251.162.106 (talk) 04:43, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
picture?
Anyone want to go out of their way and get his iconic picture?--Exander 07:06, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Done. --JohnDBuell 18:16, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Article title
Redirecting this article is a bad idea, especially using "Mr Monopoly": 1) Rich Uncle Pennybags is the historical name of the character 2) Americans always use Mr. with a period (full stop), so Mr Monopoly is flat-out wrong 3) No redirects had been fixed. --JohnDBuell 15:39, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
- The move was done with copies and pastes anyway, which is not proper - talk pages and history didn't move. I had to undo it the same way. --JohnDBuell 15:41, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:MonopolyJRCD.jpg
Image:MonopolyJRCD.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
Also known as...
im pretty sure that Rich Uncle Pennybags is also known as "the monopoly guy" by many people. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.224.222.46 (talk) 05:57, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Image copyright problem with Image:GEM Monopoly box.jpg
The image Image:GEM Monopoly box.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
- That this article is linked to from the image description page.

A few things...
... I've removed the following line as it has no source:
- Hasbro has obtained a cease and desist order to halt the sale of T-Shirts marketed by an online website featuring a stabbed-dead Rich Uncle Pennybags with the caption "End Poverty"
I've also removed the image at the top, as it looks like a joke edit. - Tbsdy lives (talk) 08:15, 14 September 2008 (UTC) The whole 'Parody in Popular Culture' paragraph has no relevance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.255.171.47 (talk) 11:41, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Move
I will move this article to its commonly known name of "Mr. Monopoly". If there is no opposition within the next 2 days I will go ahead. Kausill 07:05, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- I know him more as Uncle Pennybags than Mr Monopoly and have indeed never heard Mr Monopoly so much as "the Monopoly bloke". Tony2Times (talk) 00:53, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- Mr. Monopoly has been his official name since 1999 when Hasbro renamed him. Tostie14 (talk) 05:43, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Dates
We appear to be informed that the character was introduced in 1936 but didn't have a name until 1933. There's probably some sensible explanation, but it does not appear to be in the article as written. Czrisher (talk) 20:13, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Whiff?
"He also is known as Whiff from all the casino slot machines." This is pretty vague. To whom is he known as Whiff? All what casino slot machines? --Cholling (talk) 23:34, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

The prototype(s)
This article only names Kahn as a possible prototype (unsourced) but the article on J. P. Morgan offers another (with reference). I'll add that one but there are probably others, too. --85.253.66.252 (talk) 10:43, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Monocle
"The unnamed character made his first appearance with a hat, cane and monocle outside of Monopoly within the Parker Brothers' game Dig, released in 1940, before the U.S. entered World War II. The character did not receive a name until 1946 when the game Rich Uncle was published by Parker Brothers. His famous hat, cane, and monocle combination appeared on that game's box lid, game instructions, and currency."
If you look up photos of him in Dig (you can find it on eBay, for example), he does not have a monocle. In the image of Rich Uncle that illustrates this very article, he very clearly does not have a monocle. In fact, the character has never had a monocle. People remember him as having a monocle because similar characters (Mr. Peanut, the Mayor from Powerpuff Girls, the Penguin from Batman) do have top hats and monocles, and usually canes (with the exception of the Penguin, who carries an umbrella). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.81.181.145 (talk) 18:24, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
- On this note I needed to remove 'However, a newspaper article states, "Mr. Monopoly, the games monocled mascot, survives, his top hat one of the few items that remain" alluding to a possible change in appearance by the game company, Hasbro' as it not only is unsourced, but is also misleading. Due to the nature of this edit, however, I did not want to leave this without context. While this does appear in the Allegheny Times, it was written September 17, 2006, decades after Monopoly was released. A snippet from the article which also mentions Florida's Disney World (also decades after Monopoly's release) is available in a source not fit for the front page but nonetheless documented here on the talk page, https://www.wattpad.com/352742661-the-mandela-effect-20 . There are no freely available references to this published online, which is why I linked the AP article also mentioning a monocle in its place. Iheartdaikaiju (talk) 17:30, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
