A nice read. Will review. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 03:43, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Lead

edit
  • a guide to all aspects Would "all" not be an overstatement? Perhaps "several" would be better?
Said 'extensive'.
  • the book continued: nearly I think we need a semicolon, not a colon here.
It was correct, but perhaps rather British. Reworded.
  • Please expand the lead. It does not cover all the sections of the article.
Done.

History

edit
  • In its preface she wrote: Source for the following quote?
Done.
  • Mrs. Smiles Can we have her full name?
OK, it's Lucy, but Mrs. Smiles is what people usually write.
  • book's development and recalled --> book's development; she recalled
Done.
  • In 1863, a revised edition was issued in instalments. Source?
Done.
  • can sell for more than £1,000 Who gave this estimate?
It's cited to Judith Miller.
  • a first edition Could be better worded as "a copy of the first edition".
Done.
  • Money conversion templates could help in some, if not all, places. Not sure though, it is your choice.
Would rather not as they're virtually guaranteed to be misleading - do we use inflation-based, or earnings-based, or what? Food is now far cheaper relative to income, houses far more expensive, so comparisons are very difficult.
  • publishers Ward, Lock and Tyler Are they three different publishers or one? Could we have some more info on these publishers? I see you have linked Ward Lock later, better mention him here first. Linked first instance.
One company of publishers, three people running the company. It changed its name at least once (but like grandad's axe, remained the same in essence).
  • although Beeton continued to run it. Source?
Removed.
  • 'allowing readers to imagine...still keeping an eye on them' Should be in double quotes.
Done.
  • it was first published as a book in 1861 by S. O. Beeton Publishing, 161 Bouverie Street, London, a firm founded by her husband, Samuel Beeton. Where has this fact (from the lead) been mentioned?
Moved to history, ref added.

Approach

edit
  • Serious problem - no source
Added.
  • It would be good to place some or all of the mentioned quotes in boxes so that they attract the eye and improve the look, it seems monotonous as it is (I liked the presentation at Modern Cookery for Private Families)
Good idea, thanks. Done.
  • I think "Contents" should precede "Approach".
Done.

Contents

edit
  • Serious problem - no source
No, the Contents directly describes the book, which is the source. We hardly need to say that Chapter 6 comes from Chapter 6.
In that case, is it possible to access the book itself through ISBN and cite it here? That would mean you look at the book and say all this. I have seen this done at some places. Same may be done in Illustrations. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 09:30, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Refs added to the named chapters.
The reason here is that there are very many chapters, varying in number and title between editions. L'art d'ennuyer consiste a tout dire (the art of being boring consists of saying everything); our job for GA is to state "the main points", which the section does.
I see. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 09:30, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • (Chapter 6) an introduction to cookery I think it should be "an introduction to cookery (Chapter 6)"
Done.

Oddities

edit
  • If ref no. 9 cites the whole of the first para you can simply place it at the end of the para.
Done.
  • Take care that we do not deviate from the topic at hand by discussing the writing style and views of Mrs Beeton.
Reworded.

Plagiarism

edit
  • Cookery is a Science that is only learnt ... variety for you to choose from Why are some words in caps in this quote (like "long")?
For emphasis in the original.
  • Link 'Restoration'
Done.
  • The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy The "m" in "made" is in caps here but small in "Influence and legacy".
used M in both.
  • Hannah Glasse is a duplink.
Removed.

Illustrations

edit
  • Again, no source.
Again, the section just describes the book itself, which is the source, indeed also naming the edition chosen. The text is now referenced to the pictures in the article.

Influence and legacy

edit
  • still has iconic status I think we need "an" here.
Seems better without.
  • Hannah Glasse is a duplink.
Removed.
  • General: I think we should use British English throughout the text.
Agreed. I'm a Brit and it seems ok, did anything catch your eye?
I have fixed one that I spotted. There was some repetition in History as well, when you added the fact from the lead - it's fine now. Great job, the article is ready to be a GA now! It has been a pleasure collaborating on this. Sainsf <^>Talk all words 11:13, 1 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
