Merge

I suggest that Muckle Flugga lighthouse be merged into this article. Both are short articles and there is much overlap in subject matter and detail anyway. Robotman1974 01:00, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

Nearly two weeks have gone by since I proposed the merge and no one has objected, so I've rewritten the main article to include the information that was formerly at Muckle Flugga lighthouse. I ask other editors to please check that I haven't left anything out or gotten anything wrong. Robotman1974 09:31, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Removal of "often though, but not" fact

CarterBar, I originally removed the text stating "It is often described as the northernmost point of the British Isles, but the smaller islet of Out Stack is actually further north." but you've put it back in stating it is not a non-fact. I do not see why this is in the lead - it does nothing but say It is not the most northernmost point. Is it notable that people are wrong? Can a reference be provided for this piece of incorrect trivia? I await your response. --Bardcom (talk) 11:22, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

I know what you're getting here, and it's a reasonable remark. However, if you do a Google search for "Muckle Flugga" and "Isles" (I know, it's not scientific) the very first result makes the incorrect assertion. On the first page of listings there are several other (non-Wikii mirror sites) that make the same assertion. So, it appears that this is a common mistake, and I think it makes sense to include it here. Yes, it's a non-fact in itself, but the high number of instances of the mistake is a fact. The article clarifies the situation for anyone thinking that is is the northernmost point - and that's useful to such people. CarterBar (talk) 17:58, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Actually, I agree. It does appear to be a common mistake. Perhaps it might also be relevant to mention that Muckle Flugga is the most northerly inhabited point too? --Bardcom (talk) 19:37, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Muckle Flugga is uninhabited the lighthouse was fully automated in 2007. Out Stack is geographically further north and is therefore the most northerly point in the British Isles. Many years ago I served in the Royal Air Force as aircrew and we knew we were almost home when we saw Out Stack and Muckle Flugga.The Geologist (talk) 16:24, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
