Religion

edit

His name is a Muslim name and he considers himself a Muslim not Christian like it says in this article. Check out his myspace profile where he says he's Muslim. Why is that so difficult for some people to believe and try to deny?

  • I'm not sure anybody's trying to deny it, but MySpace isn't exactly a reputable source. It could just as easily be a fan of his, or somebody pretending to be him. Last I checked, there were nearly a dozen David Beckhams on MySpace. Akbeancounter 00:40, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I highly doubt that is Moose's actual MySpace. There are at least two references in this article, including one by the Chicago Sun Times, which verifies that Moose is a Christian. The Myspace was likely made by a fan, given all the Bears' MySpace's look alike.
Also, Moose's offcial web-bio states, "when in fact I am Christian. Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. He is the glue in my marriage and my ultimate role model for my life. My favorite verse in the Bible is Romans: 6.".--  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  00:45, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Turkish name

edit

Why is Muhammad's name given in Turkish? The article says he was born in Michigan, and nothing about a possible Turkish descent is given. I don't see any reason whatsoever to have his name in another language unless his family's origins are more spelled out; unless he lived in Turkey at some point, the pronounciation should not be in the article. -- Kicking222 16:39, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact he was born a Muslim. Then again, I could be wrong --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  16:43, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree. If anything, it should be written in Arabic because it is an Arabic name. I'm going to be taking it out.Desouki 07:37, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Arabic version of Moose's name is محسن محمد . However, I don't think the article really needs it, as he was born in America. --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  20:18, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Super Bowl Coin Toss

Did... they just boo him? --DDG 23:26, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think so... Thesublime514 23:28, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can I pray that it's because everyone in the audience was familiar with his misdemeanor charges? And not... mass-racism in America. --DDG 23:32, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'd like to believe that.. Thesublime514 23:37, 4 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
His nickname is "Moose". As is noted in the article, his fans will yell that. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.57.64.252 (talk) 23:42, 4 February 2007 (UTC).Reply

They Were Not Booing

edit

Twice I have had to remove references to Muhammad getting booed during Super Bowl XLI. He was not getting booed. The crowd was saying "Mooooooooose" like they always do. Same thing as when Darryl Johnston (fullback for the Dallas Cowboys, also nicknamed "Moose") made a play, the crowd would say "Moooooose."

Then maybe of just removing it, you could amend it so it explains it as you did here. I think a lot of people on TV had the impression he was booed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.240.194.72 (talk) 00:07, 5 February 2007 (UTC).Reply
yes please do explain it. I also thought he was booed. I was even trying to check on-line why he was booed. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.240.194.72 (talk) 00:09, 5 February 2007 (UTC).Reply
Seems to me they were booing, and not just at the coin toss —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.42.139.249 (talk) 00:27, 5 February 2007 (UTC).Reply
I thought he was getting booed too.
Done. This should at least slow if not stop such edits.Syckls 01:29, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've changed the wording to say that it is either a "moose" shout or booing - that is, to include both sides of the debate. I suspect that different parts of the crowd used different chants. It would be good to have sources for both sides, as in "X said the crowd were booing, but Y says that the crowds were shouting 'mooose'." --h2g2bob 02:13, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
This is just a joke - There's not even any source to back up the claim. Your basing a statement on some fan's folly. 2/3s of the fans at SB XLI are Bears fans, I highly doubt that many people would boo out Moose. --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  02:25, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Unless facts are added to back up the fact, I'm removing the claim since it's based on Original Research. --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  03:29, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I can't understand why you removed my comment about people thinking that Muhsin was being booed, especially considering that the majority of people in this discussion independently thought that he was. I would think that they can be safely classified as 'people'. This talk page is source enough, and if it is not, where else would you expect one to find such a source? Would you honestly expect a news publication to write an article on it? At the most, forum posts would be the only conceivable source for this tidbit, and if you are not willing to consider this a source, I doubt you would consider forums. In addition, none of the information in the trivia section is cited anyway. Syckls 05:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Per the following independent blogs including one newspaper blog (the last one), I am restoring my comment. I will even put up the newspaper blog as a citation.

None of the links work. Also Blogs cannot be used as sources per WP:Verify and Wikipedia:Reliable sources --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  15:01, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Even with the links fixed, there's no definite proof that states people actually "booed" Moose at SBXLI. Almost all the links clearly state that the Boo was a result of a misconception, due to the fact they were unfamiliar with the Bears' Customs - stated in almost all of the blogs. The links actually support the Claim that Moose was in fact not booed, but most likely cheered by fans. Additionally, with the exception of the Packers and Tribune Blogs, none of the tid-bits can be used to back up the claim that moose was booed for the reliability issues. --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  02:17, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have never once tried to make the comment that people actually were booing him. There is one editor who is trying to make this change, but I am not that person. My comment was exactly what you mentioned: people thought Muhsin was being booed, but he really wasn't. That is the exact point of the links I gathered. I too am opposed to saying that people were booing Muhsin at the same time that he was being cheered, as it is nearly impossible to verify and pointless. However, I feel that my comment has some level of importance as people were genuinely concerned that Muhsin was being booed, and that the only reason for this booing was anti-Islamic bigotry. Ah, Sorry for the confusion. This has been a hectic 24 hours. --  ShadowJester07  ►Talk  02:31, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Anyone that knows NFL football knows that Muhammad's nickname is Moose. (Along with the people that still pronounce his name as "Moo-shin.") Any commentator or NFL fan that thought he was being booed is just ignorant.Zerotta (talk) 16:29, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm adding a link to his official website, moose87.com . It doesn't say anything about his religion, but it could be of interest to readers, and elaborates on his charity work through the M2 Foundation. Akbeancounter 00:39, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

playing style

edit

The article currently reads:

Muhammad's catching ability and ball handling skills were almost unmatched on the team. During the 2005 and 2006 season, he caught several poorly thrown passes that would have been likely intercepted at the hands of other Bears’ receivers.

To be unbiased and fair, it should also read:

Muhammad also consistently dropped many passes that would have been likely caught by almost any other professional wide receiver.

It's not bashing the guy (I actually like him), it's the truth. Regardless, the current line is almost pure POV (how can you definitively know another receiver would have dropped a given pass?) and unsourced. Besides, his "catching ability and ball handling skills" should be unmatched, seeing as he was paid to be the primary receiving option. I could be argued that he got paid like a superstar, tried to act and talk like a superstar, but didn't perform like star in any sense. His tenure in Chicago was a disappointment at best. The QB situation and offensive schemes didn't help but he was definitely on the back end of his career. Zerotta (talk) 16:17, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

It shouldn't any fan commentary like that. Stuff like that needs to be sourced.►Chris NelsonHolla! 16:19, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
That's my point. The current article's line is fan commentary and unsourced. Even if it was sourced, that is so slanted and could be better written so as not to come across as biased. I would rewrite it, but I'd only add my suggestion about the drops and it would get deleted.Zerotta (talk) 16:32, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was only talking about adding the one line about the drops, not the entire commentary under it. Zerotta (talk) 16:34, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Turtles?

edit

"Controversy broke out after Muhammad was asked about the turtles indigenous to the Charlotte area. "I wanna smack a turtle for being so green," he said." I laughed over this for about two minutes straight, but seriously...can we get a source on this? I'm pretty sure this can be removed though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kraas (talkcontribs) 22:59, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't know who put the information in this article, but Muhsin Muhammad is MUSLIM!! not Christian. He says it himself on his myspace profile. Why is that so hard for people to believe?? (by the way, I am a proud Muslim)
