Post 2000's
editHello all,
Just started re-vamping the post 2000's music section for Athens, a section i feel vital to the Music of Athens, Georgia. I am in the process of updating and will be making changes periodically over the next couple of days. Thanks,

editI edited the article where it mentions Bubba Sparxxx. Pre-edit, it identified Sparxxx as being from "South Georgia", in reality he is from Lagrange, GA which is west Georgia. 68.209.231.2 01:13, 16 November 2007 (UTC)Vaughn
Matthew Sweet
editHello. I have two or three objections about the sound clip for Matthew Sweet. One is that it calls him an "underground" artist. That seems a bit extreme. Alternative, maybe yes, but what does "underground" even really mean? That's not how I would describe his music. The other two objections are that he is called "Athens-based" and that the song selected was "Evangeline." Sweet was briefly Athens-based from about 1983-1985, but "Evangeline" is from 1991. If we are going to include one of his songs, I think it'd be more appropriate to use something from his Buzz of Delight project, which he actually recorded in his Athens years. Or if we keep "Evangeline" it should be made clear that this song was from well after he left Athens. If you need me to create a Buzz of Delight sound clip, let me know. Another idea would be not to include a Matthew Sweet sound clip at all. Maybe having an Oh-OK one or something would be more appropriate. Just an idea. Moisejp (talk) 02:00, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Latin and World Music In Athens
editI have noticed a complete lack of information on latin music in the region. The latin music scene is a very real one with some very high profile local acts. Grogus in particular is an award winning act that should definitely be mentioned. Along with the groups is a large latin music dance scene with organizations like Spicy Salsa, SalsAthens, the UGA Tango Club, and Dancefx. The attendance numbers to some of these events rival many of the indie rock bands that are actually referenced in the 2000's section of this page. Visit venues like Hendershot's(200 person capacity) or the Melting Point(300 person capacity) when a latin band plays. The attendance numbers can nearly fill the venues and appear to sometimes sell out. This is a town that's known for being open minded and diverse, especially with a large international student population. Athens should represent everyone, especially since there is a large hispanic population in the area. Latin styles of music should be represented in this page as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LatinMusicInAthens (talk • contribs) 19:35, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Featured Article in need of review
editI am reviewing this article for WP:URFA/2020, an initiative to review Wikipedia's oldest articles to determine if they still meet the featured article criteria. In this review, I found the following issues that I think that stand in the way of it being of featured quality:
- insufficient inline citations in the article - there are entire paragraphs with only 1 citation at the end;
- lots of cruft - several non-notable artists and events named, without explaining their significance to the article;
- many of the source links only state that so and so artists are indeed from Athens, Georgia, never detailing why are they important to the music scene of the city;
- "have earned it the nickname "the Liverpool of the South"," - example of extraordinary claim that is not cited and is only mentioned once (in the lead).

- if you cut out the cruft does it even merit a stand-alone article or is it better covered in a more general article? (t · c) buidhe 06:08, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
- @RetiredDuke: I see that no one has edited the article since you placed this notice here. Do you still agree with your assessment in November, and if so would you be willing to nominate this to WP:FAR? Z1720 (talk) 23:45, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
