This is actually a horrible wiki entry
editI have all three versions of MyFord Touch in my driveway. None of them are horrible, though the current 3 series (qnx - ditching Microsoft) is much better.
All the BS about the map updates being abandoned is BS. Ford doesn't do the mapping, Navteq/Here does it. Ford redirects you to ford.navigation.com for updates.

Suggest moving title to MyFord
editThis press release [1] (or use WebCite archive link [2]) makes it clear that there will be three levels of infotainment products available in Ford group vehicles. Per the above press release:
- entry level SYNC uses the existing Traffic, Directions and Information application to deliver voice-based route guidance and has a monochromatic, three line alpha-numeric display screen (either using the display in the basic radio or a separate, dash mounted three line monochromatic display)
- mid level MyFord which will include SYNC and adds two 4.2" LCD screens (one in the instrument binnacle and one in the center console) and 5-way thumb buttons to the steering wheel
- high level MyFord Touch which includes SYNC and the steering wheel buttons plus two 4.2" LCD screens in the instrument binnacle and an 8" LCD touch screen in the center console.
- SD card based, optional TeleNav navigation software including maps, street data, POI's, etc. can be added to MyFord Touch only
- Sony audio, an optional upgrade to MyFord Touch adds upgraded audio and touch sensitive buttons to the center console for the defroster, etc.
While it is certainly possible to have three separate articles, one for SYNC, one for "MyFord" and one for "MyFord Touch", I want to discuss having a single article called "MyFord" which explains both "MyFord" and the optional upgrade "MyFord Touch". Obviously we would move the title then structure and expand the article to discuss both "MyFord" and the added hardware, features and options that come with "MyFord Touch". (Although it could also be argued that we combine this article with the existing SYNC article, I'm not advocating for it. Feel free to comment on that though.)
There is currently no article for "MyFord", so we can move the title to "MyFord" easily, should consensus reflect that option.

The buggiest, most unsafe system in the world!
editI bought a 2011 Ford Edge with MyFord Touch about eight months ago. It is not possible to take a single trip, short or long, without the system malfunctioning in minor or major ways. The car was in the shop from the first week of ownership, and it has received no fewer than four dealer "updates" promising to make the system operable. The MyFord Touch "brain" failed completely and had to be replaced. The navigation function frequently freezes, leaving one stranded and unable to reach a destination. Inputs to the "touch" screen sometimes take 10 seconds to register--try inputting an address on the navigation system with that kind of delay! If iPhone touch screens were this slow, no one would buy them! During my last visit to the Ford dealer, the service manager blamed my smart phone for the system's inability to function reliably, even though I was using the same phone when I owned my previous car, a 2010 Ford Fusion with a first generation Ford Sync system; in that car the phone worked perfectly and synced via Bluetooth as it was supposed to.
Ford is not stepping up to the plate on this one. For the past four months they have been promising to send out an update to new owners, but none has arrived. Meanwhile we are stuck with MyFord Touch systems that do not work and that constitute a dangerous distraction while driving.
This article does not go far enough in describing the defects inherent in the MyFord Touch system. It needs to be expanded to underscore serious safety concerns, not to mention the sheer annoyance of paying $35,000 for a car that is defective. Resale value is also an issue, since downgrades by Consumer Reports have devalued these vehicles. Apostle12 (talk) 00:20, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
UPDATE: As of 5 March 2012 Ford started offering MyFord Touch updates free of charge to all owners of Ford and Lincoln cars equipped with these systems. In addition updated navigation chips are being provided to owners with navigation systems. The early reports regarding the update are positive, with some significant reservations. The Ford dealer installed both the MyFord Touch update and the new nav chip in my Edge, yet the following problems remain:
- -The system still fails to sync with my iPhone4. Particularly baffling is when the system partially syncs with my iPhone--the touch screen controls cause the sound (phone calls, iPod songs, etc.) to come out of the iPhone's speaker instead of the car speakers.
- -On frequent occasions, the phone rings through the system, however one cannot answer the phone; important business calls are lost because of this defect.
- -Often iPod songs appear to be playing (one can see the second-by-second countdown on the screen), yet no sound comes out of either the iPhone speakers or the car speakers. In this case the only cure is to completely shut off the car, open the driver's door, power down the phone, and then power up the phone and start the car all over again; with multiple tries, this sometimes corrects the problem. On other occasions the only cure is to remove the iPhone from the system, then reinstate the sync coding procedure. If that fails to work, one must completely reboot the system.
- -The interface between the touch screen and the navigation system is still defective. If one tries to enter an address, the system at some point tries to take over and complete street names, city names and so on. When this happens, the system gets confused by screen inputs; it either crashes or requires the operator to start over. The only way to avoid this problem is to pause for 5-10 seconds between key inputs, which means that touch screen input is extremely slow. Often entering a single address can take ten minutes or more, and that is if the system does not completely crash. This is extremely frustrating when one needs to arrive on time at a programmed destination. Brand new excuse: "Couldn't program my nav system."

I've found it a bit challenging to sort out what is typical of a user's experience. While it's difficult to gauge what percentage of users are unhappy, numerous threads online suggest that the system is less than stable, just by their sheer length, as well as the issues indicated. For example, here, here, and in various threads here. I've created a site to track bugs in MFT in hopes that it will eventually publicize the numerous problems with the system. However, as the article currently stands, I think it accurately reflects the media's view of MFT, if perhaps not the owners' view. The bugs seem to have been kept out of the mainstream press fairly well. Instead, there is mostly criticism of aesthetics and usability. Dsav (talk) 02:21, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Tone/Unreliable/Twisting and Menacing of words
editThis article is a prime example of how Wikipedia can never be a legitimate source because of citations/information such as this.
Let's start with the Criticism section:
"Unreliability of the MyFord Touch system has been cited by J.D. Powers & Associates as the primary factor contributing to a decline in Ford's standing in the 2011 "Initial Quality Survey" of new car purchasers.[12] The study ranked 2011Ford vehicles' initial quality in 23rd position, down from fifth position in 2010. The ranking of Lincoln vehicles, a Ford subsidiary that also uses the Touch system branded as "MyLincoln Touch," declined from eighth to 17th place year over year."
This is fair.
"Thousands of owners have complained that MyFord Touch systems crash without warning, do not respond to touch commands, and fail to reliably sync with mobile phones and iPods. In addition to requiring repeated trips to Ford dealerships for repairs, owners contend that these system malfunctions are quite distracting and contribute to accidents that cause loss of property, injury and death. [13]"
What the hell is the "cause loss of property, injury and death?" This sets a tone that makes the statement have a very negative reaction, as if MyFord Touch systems are going to explode in your face, or if your system crashes, you're giong to somehow veer off the highway. Why does this Article has this, but not under an article such as the Toyota unintended acceleration? Ridiculous.
"Since late 2011, Ford has responded to these criticisms by promising complete updates for more than 250,000 MyFord Touch owners, however as of March 2, 2012, no such updates have been forthcoming and problems remain unresolved. [14]"
Untrue, and I remember the page having an edit that state that on March 5th, Ford released a performance upgrade that fixed these issues. Someone please correct this, or have an admin lock the test, as someone is deleting information.
"Ford CEO Alan Mulally has downplayed the problems with MyFord Touch, stating the system is solid and blaming problems on lack of user sophistication with high-tech devices. Many tech-savvy owners have responded that they have no problem with modern technology, countering that the MyFord Touch system is simply unreliable and frequently crashes without warning. [15]"
Who wrote this? This sounds like either a GM employee, or a disgruntled customer, and that's crap that needs to stay off Wikipedia. NOWHERE in citation 15 did Mulally even attempt to "down-play" and place blame on the customers. This is complete FUD.
"For new car owners whose MyFord Touch systems crash, both Ford dealerships and Ford-sponsored websites have been recommending that owners disconnect the black (negative) lead to the battery for several minutes, reconnect, then run the car for at least five minutes to reboot the MyFord Touch system. Owners have complained that this is extremely inconvenient, even dangerous in many situations, and should not be required of owners who have paid tens-of-thousands of dollars for their new cars."
Again, why is this posted? This is suppose to be an open platform encyclopedia, not a manual. Not only that, this is trying to paint an intensely negative image of MFT. The part that says "and should not be required of wodner have paid tens-of thousands of dollars for their new cars." is lol worthy.

- There is nothing "menacing" in the sections you cite, all of which were sourced from articles in mainstream automobile publications. Safety concerns have been paramount among criticisms of the MyFord Touch system, especially criticism by Consumer Reports, which judged the system "dangerously distracting." In the context of drivers operating motor vehicles on the nation's public highways, distracted drivers are notorious for causing accidents that lead to loss of property, injury and death. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/ford/edge/road-test.htm
- You seem to confuse the word "crash," as used in the metaphorical sense to describe computer crashes (or in this case, high tech MyFord Touch system crashes), with physical crashes. No one was implying that the system might "blow up in your face," although it is quite legitimate to conclude that MyFord Touch system crashes are dangerously distracting to drivers and can cause physical crashes.
- Regarding your claim that Alan Mulally made no attempt to blame lack of user sophistication for MyFord Touch problems, the source quoted Mulally as follows:
- But Mulally conceded that Ford "got feedback early" from consumers "very clearly that in some areas maybe it was a little too sophisticated with maybe a little too many options."
- In addition, Ford issued a statement to all MyFord Touch owners telling the owners that Ford was not responsible for syncing problems with smart phones, including the iPhone, blaming all syncing problems on owner failure to properly operate the phones and owner failure to update smart phone software.
- Mulally never accepted responsibility for inherent defects in the MyFord Touch system. Instead he stated that the system was "a little too sophisticated"--well, no, the system flat-out did not function properly. The problem was not that it was overly sophisticated or offered "too many options."
- Please carefully read all of the article's citations before you conclude that "Wikipedia can never be a legitimate source."
- That said, the article did need an update to reflect reviews of the current March 2012 MyFord Touch update. What was entirely true on 2 March 2012 was no longer true after 5 March 2012. Information from current reviews of the March 2012 MyFord Touch update, most of it positive, has now been included in the article. All of the reviewers continue to voice reservations about the system; those reservations are also noted.Apostle12 (talk) 10:30, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Sync 2 Warranty Part - Is this even true?
editThe below has been added but has no sources and I'm suffering a lot of issues with my Sync 2 and have been in and out of the dealer for 2 years now trying to fix it. Can I have some sources for this because I want to be able to sue this in conjunction with a solicitor to challenge Ford to either replace my car or give me Sync 3.
SYNC2 Warranty
Any units which have failed and where the vehicle is under warranty will naturally be rectified under the warranty scheme, however it is likely a SYNC2 unit will be replaced with a SYNC2 unit where on-hand stock permits, unless there are repeated reproducible problems and the customer has noticed one of the many operational issues that exist. Ford has a strict policy relating to repeated failures of a component and this falls into that category suggesting fitment of a SYNC3 unit where applicable to prevent further failures would be an appropriate solution.
An internal document circulated in Q4 2015 stated that any new vehicle from Q1 2016 onwards fitted with SYNC2 upon delivery should be replaced under warranty. This was to safeguard the batch building and storing of vehicles being equipped with the older option and making it to market during the cross over period. This also safeguarded against dealerships pre-ordering vehicles and storing against possible future orders.
