Maxwell or Descartes?

edit

According to James Clerk Maxwell, "[Maxwell's] work [on N-ellipses] was not entirely original, since René Descartes had also examined the properties of such multifocal ellipses in the 17th century".

But this article says that "They were first investigated by James Clerk Maxwell in 1846."

Anybody like to clarify?

If n is odd, the algebraic degree of the curve is   while if n is even the degree is

May I suppose that n = k here? —:Tamfang (talk) 07:05, 8 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

It must be. I've changed it to use n exclusively, since that is in the title. Double sharp (talk) 13:47, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

The 1-ellipse corresponds to the circle. The 2-ellipse corresponds to the classic ellipse.

Is there a good reason not to change corresponds to to is? —Tamfang (talk) 20:16, 27 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not that I can think of.   Done. Double sharp (talk) 13:46, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
