Ordering of state/city
editI have moved the state above the city as a more likely referent of "NY." While it's debatable which one is more important in the context of "New York," I think it's pretty clearly the state for "NY." After all, it's the official postal abbreviation for New York (state), with no other abbreviation competing for attention (e.g. California is CA but also has Calif, Cal, etc.). For New York City the canonical abbreviation is "NYC," and while the use of the abbreviation "NY" exists it's nowhere near as common. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 02:44, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
- Makes total sense, thanks! Note that the state had been first until somebody swapped it with the city in October 2018.[1] — JFG talk 04:10, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

NY → NY (disambiguation) – When used in an American context, the state is almost always what's meant, since NYC is the typical acronym for the city. Only context I know of which its used for the city is in sports abbreviations (I was going to add "and those I ❤ NY T-shirts" but it turns out those are also about the state). None of the other topics come close in terms of relevance. Mach61 17:48, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose New York is ambiguous, and so is NY. No sources cited. This does nothing to improve clarity. 162 etc. (talk) 18:21, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose yes the city is likely to also be abbreviated this way and also there are other things it can stand for like North Yorkshire which is the equivalent of a state in England. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:25, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose "NY" frequently used to refer to the city, not just the state, just look at NYPD, FDNY. Per the example with New York, it is ambiguous. Thus highly ambiguous. -- 64.229.90.32 (talk) 05:53, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose, no PRIMARY.--Ortizesp (talk) 13:45, 12 June 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose The idea of "New York" is probably primary for NY. But since New York is a disambiguation page anyways, it is more helpful to have the actual disambiguation page for NY here, since both the state and city are still just one click away. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 00:36, 13 June 2024 (UTC)
