Datok kong worship originated from the Malays

I'd beg to differ from the opinion of a writer saying dato worship originated from Matang. Cases of ancient Chinese leaders/people who did something great for the society being deified were not uncommon, and among them was the ever famous Sam Poh Kong (Admiral Cheng Ho). But He is not classified under the 'Dato Kong' class of divinities. Another case is the 5 founding Hakka elders of Tanjong Tokong, Penang, fisherman settlement. They were deified and are worshiped till today at the ever famous Thai Pak Kung Temple at Tanjong Tokong. They are also different from Dato kong.

According to my grandparents, Datoks are generally Malay spirits, although some are of Indian origins. That explains why the offerings exclude alcohol and pork. They are the 'original settlers' in an area before our arrival, therefore proper respect should be shown to them eg. setting up a shrine for the Dato. There's even a well established tradition among contractors to set up a shrine for the Dato before any groundwork is done. Permission is seeked from the Dato to use the land for development.

Very interesting, good that your grandparents provide such infos. The Matang origins was probably a popular theory. Dato Kong/Na Tuk Kong is a Malay-Chinese mixed (such as Dato/Datuk Ali) is more reliable.

I myself haven't seen the Matang Chinese Dato Kong, but i'm very sure he's not a Dato. He's what in Penang Hokkien called 'ang kong' (deity). When we mention Dato Kong, most Malaysian Chinese will think of spirits of Holy Malay religious teachers, spirits residing in inanimate objects such as anthills, trees, stones or even old objects (like the 'Tua Phao Kong', the canon that miraculously beached itself at Butterworth ferry terminal).

Yes, click the Upload file at the left panel. In the next screen, look for the Browse, choose your filename XXX.JPG, then at the Summary, write "...Picture created by this user, free to use...", then click Upload file.

After you uploaded the file, make sure you copy the filename XXXXXX.jpg and go to the page you want to edit. Then copy the 'image code' from the any Wiki-pages and paste onto your page. L joo 12:27, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Merge

I have undone the deletion of Datuk Keramat because the editor did not merge the articles, but merely deleted the article content at that page. The content of the two articles should be properly merged by someone who has access to the references. Andrew Yong (talk) 15:32, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
