Double bass, cello or viollin?
editThis article says he was a double bass prodigy, The Soloist says it was the cello and elsewhere he is referred to as a violin prodigy. Which is it, or is it all three? – ukexpat (talk) 21:49, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
HellifIno:~~ I'm probably doing this wrong, but all the same: He was a violin prodigy, as stated by Steve Lopez in several radio interviews that were recently aired on NPR/KUOW (local-ish public radio station). I have no idea where the "double-bass" or "cello" parts came from. I have heard absolutely NOTHING from Lopez that identified anything other than Ayers being a violin prodigy.
Creative license? If so, that license should be revoked. If a story is based on real life, it should at least get the basics right. It's ok to play with what was said 'n such. But it was a violin. Double bass, cello or violin?
editHe played the double bass very very well in the mid to late 1970's. I know that for a fact because we used to play a few R&B songs together at my mom's house in the neighborhood where we grew up. I faked playing the piano and he marvelously played his bass. At that time I remember distinctly that he could even play the piano much better than me. So for Tony to play the cello and the violin would have not been a great feat for someone with his talents. But my impression is that with the skills he showed when he played that bass, it almost certainly must have been his first love. I can still envision his facial expressions and how impressed I was at his playing when we played together and that was 35 or so years ago. I do not impress easily. I first met Tony probably at age 11 when he enrolled at Doan Elementary School. I remember vividly the first day he came to class and the teacher introducing him, and all of the girls giggling because he was cute. Later (1964-1966) we went to Harry E.
