We classify bands' genres by what reliable source coverage about a band says they are, not by what a band describes themselves as being. Lots of bands, for example, create their own self-invented genre terms to convey how unique they are, but that doesn't mean that we follow suit — we assign bands to the recognized genres that critics describe their music as belonging to. I actually agree that "goth rock" isn't the ideal description — there's a friggin' saxophone blowing an R&B-esque horn line on "68 Hours" — but it is where most music critics put them, and it's not outright wrong either (the article sources a direct Bauhaus influence, for example.)
