History

edit

Nature’s Sunshine was founded in 1972 by the Hughes Family, who started encapsulating capsicum in their home kitchen. The company utilizes a multi-level marketing business model. Each distributor markets products directly to potential customers, and can also recruit and train customers to become distributors. Distributors are paid from the retail markup on products they are able to sell personally, as well as a performance bonus based on the sales of distributors they have recruited. Citation: Xardel, Dominique (1993). The Direct Selling Revolution. Understanding the Growth of the Amway Corporation. Blackwell Publishing. pp. 1–4. ISBN 978-0-631-19229-9. The company broke ground on its first corporate headquarters in 1976. A $1.2 million dollar building, the 36,000 sq. ft. facility included offices, manufacturing areas, and R&D and Quality Control labs. Nature’s Sunshine began international expansion in 1976 by entering Canada. Today it operates in more than 40 countries. Company stock first appeared on the NASDAQ stock exchange in 1978.

• I would like to challenge the phrasing of the first sentence here. Capsicum is a genus of plants. Capsaicin is the chemical that distinguishes the genus. According to the company's website, they encapsulated cayenne pepper: https://www.naturessunshine.com/about/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Etleyden (talkcontribs) 23:13, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Avoid Promotional Style

edit

Regarding the material proposed for inclusion, it is way too promotional, lacking reliable third-party sources, full of puffery and fails the WP:NOV sniff test. Rhode Island Red (talk) 02:15, 10 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. Marking this edit request as declined. Altamel (talk) 04:57, 10 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I have made minor changes in formatting (but to nothing else) in what's above. -- Hoary (talk) 22:30, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Industry Update

edit

Hello, I work for Nature's Sunshine and they would like to update the industry copy on this article. It is being pulled into Google's knowledge graph and is providing incorrect information into the SERPs. They are not a multi-level marketing company, despite what you may be able to Google. The company is a Natural Health and Wellness Company. They would like that to be changed on this article. Thank you. ---- Kduncan22084 (talk) 22:54, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Kduncan22084 I don't mean to put too fine a point on it, but Wikipedia is not concerned with what third parties do with Wikipedia information(like Google "knowledge graphs") nor is it particularly interested in what a company would prefer to be referred to as. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources choose to state about a topic. If the preponderance of such sources use the term "multi level marketing" to refer to this company, then Wikipedia does, too. As I said at the help desk, you will need to show either that the sources currently in the article are inaccurately summarized and do not say what is claimed in this article, or you will need to show that most sources use a term other than MLM to describe this company. The company is free to describe itself as it wishes on its own website and is even free to use its website and social media to discourage people from believing what they read in this article. 331dot (talk) 23:26, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
With Google I reached this page on their own website, titled "Marketing plan NSP in simple language" they say Nature’s Sunshine’s philosophy is to care for people’s health combined with the possibility of a stable business. You can start your own business today and without any investment! Unlike many companies, Nature’s Sunshine does not charge an entrance fee. NSP’s business is built on network marketing. Can you explain how they are not a multilevel marketing company? StarryGrandma (talk) 23:44, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Many reliable, independent sources describe this business as a multilevel marketing company, and accordingly, so too will Wikipedia. When writing an article about a company, we primarily summarize what reliable sources that are entirely independent of the company say about it. Only limited, non-controversial information should come from the company, such as their founding date, the name of the CEO, their headquarters city, and the like.
